Someone was recently telling me to get the good, high paying welding jobs, you need to buy a "welding rig" and it costs about 100k. I don't know anything about welding, but this sounds like bull shite.

Is it?

Welding rig doesn't cost anywhere near $100K. Basically, you are gonna need a one ton dually with a flat bed on it. whatever tool boxes you choose plus welding machine, torch setup, etc.

and, of course, chrome truck nuts....

You can get a welding rig but you limiting yourself to pipeline work.

$100,000 is bullshite.

4WD truck and a gas powered welding machine can be had for $30-40,000

Seems like learning to weld would be the first step.

This. Unless they are putting their welding rig on the back of a brand new 3500 HD they won't even hit 25k.

You can make north of 100k in plenty of welding jobs without having to own your own rig.

If you're looking to take up welding and be a welder you don't just learn to operate a welding machine and be able to make a nice horizontal pass and suddenly be making $50/hour.
It takes quite a few years of experience to become a real welder.
It's not as easy as some seem to think. It's like most other skilled crafts - some can get there and some cant.

Welding isn't easy. I've tried a few times just messing around and it's definitely something that takes a whole lot of practice. I doubt there are many natural born welders out there.

Absolutely. Anyone who blows off welding as something anyone can just pick up and do well is completely ignorant.

Going to votech for a welding degree/cert/whatever has a much better ROI than most college degrees.

I know a guy that all he does is weld by remote control. All he does is look at a screen and operates a joystick and makes way over $100k a year, of course all he does is nuclear work too.

Fyi, if you are gonna be a welder, you've gotta learn the lingo. Learn to talk shite like Tatoo the Great....
