Guess I have a soft spot?

I don't think it's as much a soft spot as it is a respect for life. In Genesis, God gave us dominion over animals. In that verse, the Hebrew word is "radah." Later found in Psalm 72:8:
quote:

He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.

It goes on to say:
quote:

12 For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
the afflicted who have no one to help.
13 He will take pity on the weak and the needy
and save the needy from death.
14 He will rescue them from oppression and violence,
for precious is their blood in his sight.

So your dominion over your cow is one of respect and caring, while also knowing that it serves as a source of food for you. It's good and normal for you to feel uneasy about it because it means you're appreciating the sacrifice being made.

My grandfather raised beef cattle. I grew up looking at them as food and it has never bothered me to harvest any livestock.

Dont name them, be kind to them, take care of them, keep it business. Respect the protein, though. Cook it well, enjoy it, don’t waste it.

She didn’t know. Don’t sweat it.

Even when we had cattle, I always advocate selling the calf and buying just good cuts of meat so you must’ve got all that shite meat

If you feel this way over 1 cow then I don’t advise you watch the history of The Union Stockyards.

Nothing to be ashamed of. I would venture to guess 1 in 25,000 people (probably a lot more) have ever even laid eyes on a single one of the animals they will consume in their lifetime.

Hell, I feel different about the fish I catch as opposed to the seafood I buy.

I feed them, I water them, I check on them. For people with high empathy, this is not easy.

I hear what you're saying, but you have to shift your mindset...or you will be broken each time.

If they are nothing but beef cattle, then they only serve one purpose in this life...and either you, or someone else, will be sending them to the processor.

If you want to keep ranching on the land, then maybe switch to dairy cattle?

That said, I guess you could always choose to not sell any of them and truly keep them as pets...but that might not work financially for you.

Well when she steps out and smells the scent of all the other livestock killed there she will know something is up- trust me. Like a gig at the vet.

Circle of life bruh- kill her and eat her.

Btw, is it a “cow” or a slaughter calf?

It feels bad, but I'm not going to stop eating meat and I will for sure be thinking about the way we fed her. I appreciate that animal. I am sorry that we had to do what we had to do, but I am appreciative that we will be fed.

Never hurts to have an appreciation of where the food comes from. More people should do this.

When she gets taken back she will be wondering wtf is going on, but she will be stunned and then killed. She won't be freaking the frick out.

She'll be scared to death, lonely, and in a place that she's never known. The person who hand fed her won't be there.

In fact, that's the person who sent her there.

Sent plenty to the processor. Butchering one ourselves in a few weeks. We keep the good behaving cows, cull the bad behavior out. Butchering this one because per haven’t been impressed with the processors lately.

It’s food. Get over it.

It helps when you are involved in directly contributing to harvesting meat. I appreciate the sanctity of life when I go hunting and kill a deer or ducks. The Old Testament practices of sacrifices and especially Passover are used to make the Jews truly appreciate the value of life. (Not to mention the whole price of forgiveness.)

Is this real? Did you have it in your backyard or something? It's a steer, they are meant for eating.

We haven’t established “what it is “ yet, for sure. He said a “cow”.

Nationwide, that's not unlikely.

Just under 5 million people in Louisiana and we all either hunt or know someone who does.

About twice that many people in New York City alone. That's gotta skew the numbers.
