Who butchers a cow?

Typically humans do, but we’ve had coyotes take down a sick momma and her calf before
That’s when I get sad. They don’t deserve that sort of death.

Such a weird “I subscribe to Omaha Steaks” brag.

If it bothers you to know who is in the freezer, you can always buy beef full of antibiotics and hormones at the grocery store.

We’ve bought a half cow from a local farmer annually for a while now. The meat is far and away superior to anything sold in a grocery store. We usually get best-cut steaks, roasts, and hamburger. Thinking of doing the same thing with a hog soon.

It feels bad, but I'm not going to stop eating meat and I will for sure be thinking about the way we fed her. I appreciate that animal. I am sorry that we had to do what we had to do, but I am appreciative that we will be fed.
If we more of this attitude our (American society) relationship with food would be healthier and we would be healthier. It’s good to know where your food comes from and appreciate how it got to your plate.
We could all stand to learn something from the Native American Indians who survived off the land, and did not waste any part of any animal they killed for survival, nor did they hold anything but respect for them.
Too many people think that hamburger just magically appears on the grill.

Nothing to be ashamed of. I would venture to guess 1 in 25,000 people (probably a lot more) have ever even laid eyes on a single one of the animals they will consume in their lifetime.
Do fish, crabs, crawfish etc count?

“Not dumb”? Compared to what, a dog turd? Like all non-humans and most humans, cows are incredibly dumb.

Cows are as dumb as a box of hammers. That cow won't know what's happening when it gets brought to slaughter.
I'll be sending one for slaughter in the fall and I'm very much looking forward to all of the beef it will provide.

Moved back home 3 months ago. One of the reasons was to help aging inlaws.
We sent one of our cows to the processor last week. Should yield 350-400 pounds.
Very bittersweet feeling. Anyone relate?
Sorry to read about the in-laws…
…and the tragic loss from LSU’s flag corps.

Yes Cows are family too. If you love your animals like you and I do.

I raised cattle for years, always had beef in the freezer. Beef bull, partial dairy cow. At times I’d milk the mom, till the calf could catch up.

Bought a baby rabbit, put it in a cage, raised it to fatten & butcher. Young daughters gave it a name and insisted It would not be harmed. No rabbit stew resulted.

I guess I’m weird but I can’t eat anything I raise.I’ve been having chickens a few years now.The old hens that aren’t laying many eggs Grandpa would’ve had Grandma make chicken and dumplings.I just keep feeding them until they die of old age.
Grandpa would have been ashamed of me.
I shoot 2-3 deer every year but I don’t like to watch them very long before I pull the trigger.I’m glad to get the deer but I feel kinda sad for them at the same time.

Should’ve sold the cow and bought a steer. Processing cost the same but the quality of meat is quite different.

Have you ever heard a group of mama cows the night after their calves are taken from them? There's a lot of emotion there. But yeah, I love eating beef.
