I was a kid, but I remember parents complaining about kids waiting at the bus stop in the dark.

Yeah, it didn’t last long. Funny how people forget it was tried once and failed miserably.

I was down voted more on my statement, none of those people realize it was tried and it sucked.

HH is right and I remember it as well. As part of the Emergency Daylight Saving Time Energy Conservation Act of 1973, year-round DST began on January 6, 1974, with the goal of conserving energy during the 1973 oil crisis. The change proved unpopular, as many people were unhappy with children going to school and people commuting to work in the dark during the winter months.

Let's examine how this would work- shortest day of this year in New Orleans:

6:52 AM Sunrise
Sunday, December 21, 2025 (CST)

5:05 PM Sunset.
Sunday, December 21, 2025 (CST)

So, with DST, sunset will now be at 6:05 PM, but sunrise will be at 7:52 PM. Lots of kids going to school in the dark.

Even worse up north where the nights are longer and days are shorter in the winter=- for example, in Minneapolis:

7:48 AM Sunrise
Sunday, December 21, 2025 (CST)

4:34 PM Sunset
Sunday, December 21, 2025 (CST)

Under DST, sunset would be 5:34 PM, but sunrise would become 8:48 AM -- almost 9 in the morning.

Yes, but the other tweet says suspending daylight saving time.

Which is it?

It is shitty internet "Journalism". The quote by Trump (calling for more daylight i.e. daylight savings time being permanent) is being misinterpreted by the "reporter".

Just move Alabama and middle TN to Eastern Time and I’m good with standard time. States north of us are on Eastern Time.

Like I said before, DST doesn't work in the winter months.

You work from "can't " to "can't ".

How is it possible that people don’t understand that daylight is shorter in the winter regardless of what time we assign to it?

It’s just not that big of a difference to be worth the feigned outrage.

You’re correct, if we had to pick one—which would be dumb—it would need to be standard time.

i'd be fine with that. I rather my kids play outside after school than it getting dark around 6 during the few months that it is pleasant to be outside on the gulf coast

It would be dark around 6/630 in the winter even if we stayed in DST year round at our latitude. Oh and it wouldn’t get light outside until almost 8am

If we had to pick one, which we don’t and shouldn’t, Standard time is superior. We don’t actually need 2030 sunsets in July

Negative.

It depends on who you are and where you are.

Living in Louisiana I prefer DST.

Which is why it prob will never go permanent one way or the other. Too many people want different things.

That's my point. When the rest of the country observes time change it causes some unique issues for the state that doesn't. Like your digital devices rolling back an hour if you don't remember to set them to the specific AZ setting, causing you to be late to work.

It's not a big deal and I'd still rather not do time changes. It was just an off the cuff comment.

You prefer DST because you identify it with our long summer days. You realize it’s going to be twilight or dark around 6:30 tonight right? And creep closer to 6 until the equinox in December even if we stayed on DST

I fail to see how that’s any different than it being dark at 1730, when you consider the trade off would be darkness until after 8 in the morning

Like many others have said, we’ve literally done this before. Everyone hated it.

The entire Florida panhandle just needs to be on EST instead of CST. That’ll help.

Ridiculous to have half of the panhandle on CST just for tourists from AL & GA & TN

I love that time of the year.

I can actually make it home from work and cut the grass in the twilight and cooler evenings.

You understand that you’d be able to do that regardless, right?

Or do you get off work at 7:00 pm?

This whole fake outrage over the time change is hilarious because 60 minutes just isn’t that significant. We change times to not not have to deal with darkness until 9am. It was never actually about crops or farmers or anything else. That’s fake news. We have less daylight in winter.

I don’t think that’s how it works…

I vote Standard Time year round. We don’t need sunlight until 8 PM in the summer. That just means it doesn’t even START to cool off until 8 PM.

Or my solution that no one’s talking about: flip-flopping daylight saving time. Standard time most of the year and daylight saving time only in the winter. That way in the summer we have 7 PM sunsets and in the winter we have 6 PM sunset.

here me out, we could just change the clocks and everyone keeps their schedules the same.
except for all the hospitals, hotels, broadcast stations, prisons, etc that have to be staffed 24 hours a day 365 days a year that have to completely change their schedules every six months
