I know that the Swiss Guard has modern weapons and training for their actual security functions. But I wonder if the guys on the ceremonial detail have any training with those weapons if something were to happen before the 'actual' force could mobilize.

What has the more orthodox catholics in his corner?
He's the current bishop of the Jerusalem which may be considered an ecumenical play to bridge Christians, Jews, and Palestinians. He appears to be more open to the Traditional liturgy and uses latin when he does the Norvus Ordo Mass( Mass instituted post Vatican II).
During Oct 7 crisis in Israel he offered himself to swap for release of the other hostages.

On October 7, 2023, just one week after the consistory, the conflict between Israel and Hamas erupted, following an attack in Israel by Hamas militiamen from Gaza. Two weeks later, the Patriarch called for a day of prayer and fasting for peace, just after having said he was ready to offer himself as a hostage in exchange for the release of the children who had fallen into the hands of Hamas terrorists.

I can't lie it is pretty cool I was in the Sistine Chapel 2 weeks ago. CSB
But I didn't like some of the other parts of the Vatican Museum. The new Pope needs to kick all of that pagan crap out of there and send it to the Roman museum.

Need 2/3 of the votes to be elected Pope. Vote is done in secrecy.
133 Cardinal electors in this Conclave, so 89 votes are needed to be elected Pope.

Can we gamble on next pope with Draft Kings?
Posted on 5/7/25 at 11:10 am to danilo
There’s odds out there for sure. Not sure about draft kings, but my bookie has them up
Posted on 5/7/25 at 11:12 am to IT_Dawg
Also noteworthy is that, of that 133 Cardinal electors, 108 of them were made a Cardinal by Pope Francis. That doesn’t mean all of those 108 share Pope Francis’ exact ideology, but you would think most of them were at least “ok” with most of the actions he took as Pope.
I don’t think we will see a really conservative/traditionalist get elected. I think the best hope for those who didn’t like the direction Pope Francis took the Catholic Church would be for a moderate/compromise candidate like Pizzaballa to be elected.
I’m not Catholic, so I don’t really have skin in the game, but considering how massive and influential the Catholic Church is, I would still like to see it led by a non-liberal.

Yes- those are for sure “ceremonial” but they are not decorative. The Swiss Guard are proficient with all of the weapons they possess. They get extensive training with them.

The electorate that elected Francis was appointed entirely by JPII and Benedict, so you never know.
Also, 12 years is a long time for the College of Cardinals to get pissed at Francis, even the ones elevated by him.

This is overblown, the cardinals appointed by JP II and Benedict selected Francis.
