Was this karate instructor on drugs or did he just lose all rational thought?

He was a Sociopath and a con man. He thought he was gonna con his way out of this. But he was going to jail for the rest of his life for aggravated kidnapping which is mandatory life with no parole.

I was too young (and not in BTR) at the time, but I found this story several years ago. As a father, I like to think I would do the exact same thing, because you know that as long as that guy is alive, your kid can't truly feel safe - not to mention putting my kid through the horrors of court proceedings and testimony while that jackwagon smiles and leers at them across the courtroom. The fatherly thing of, "Put it on me, not on my kid" like taking a bullet for them makes complete rational sense in this situation. Your father knew he was likely going to prison, and gladly did it - for you. I hope I can be that kind of dad, too.

This name doesn't ring a bell - who is Mike Barnett?

Had a friend, Mike Gum, that I think was either a student or was going to be one that was getting me interested.
Mike Gum probably should have been the damned instructor himself.

Nor anyone else's.

Obviously our own children come first, but in things like this they're all innocent and should be spared such trauma.

I remember watching this pre kids and thought, "wow is that what it is going to be like when I have kids, am I going to love them that much do that?"

Now having kids, I can only hope that I would have the courage to do the same thing your father did should something like that happen to my children.

Whether what your dad did was right, wrong, or indifferent doesn't matter. That man showed and unconditional love for his child that he was willing to do ANYTHING to protect you. He is a hero for that and his strength has certainly resonated with me as a parent. I hope that my children know how much I love them the way you probably know how much your dad loved you.

For the crowd that says "let the justice system do it's job" BOLLOCKS... so many pedophiles and molesters get let off easy only to keep going(even in the 80s... actually especially in the 80s. keep this in mind also, peds and molesters almost NEVER get caught on their first, second or even third.

I'd like to think that actions like March 18, 1984 made more than a few potential miscreants think twice about doing it.

You and I are the same age, so my parents were following the story closely once you went missing. When "Why, Gary?" debuted, Pops 19 (who was a very quiet man) blurted out "Good fricking shot!"

I cried after seeing it and when my Dad noticed, he thought the tears were for him and I immediately said "eff no, for Mr. P, they're gonna put him in jail forever!"
Dad said, "Who? Ossie? not effin likely."

ETA: Your Dad was and still is a hero in the town of New Roads.

You honestly think this guy was going to get off in Louisiana in 1984? The kidnapping alone would have sent him away for probably good.

The kidnapping is what would have put him away. Many like him sans kidnapping served very little time and in most cases plead down.

Edit, in LA in the 70s and 80s

Apparently the law enforcement officer who “restrained” our hero after the epic shot.

“Why Gary, why?

There is a backstory here that Jody alludes to is made clear in his book. Have a feeling (without having read the book) that there was at least a little bit of teamwork involved. Will let Jody further explain.
