Watching a documentary on occupational licensure law corruption. Louisiana a huge focus

Louisiana’s occupational licensure laws are borderline abuses of human rights
The documentary features a segment on a nice and sweet lady from Baton Rouge named sandy meadows.
Sandy meadows had little education and no resources, other than her talent for making beautiful flower arrangements which local grocers purchased from her.
Louisiana’s horticulture commission- which shouldn’t be allowed to exist- got word of this woman’s activities. It threatened to close the grocery stores that were buying Ms. Meadows’ flower arrangements because she was unlicensed.
Meadows tried but failed to get a license, because of a ridiculous written test that requires knowledge of nothing flower-related.
What makes things worse, on the part of the test that requires you to make 4 flower arrangements in 4 hours, the judges of the arrangements are licensed florists themselves, who have a financial stake in restricting entry.
Meadows spent many years trying to get licensed but never could.
She died in poverty, prevented from doing what she loved for a living.
But the people of Louisiana were protected from menace of an unlicensed flower lady
Let me make one thing clear: using the power of govt to restrict entry into your profession, in order to protect your salary, is one of the most corrupt things I can imagine doing. The people that do it deserve bad things to happen to them
Later on, another Louisiana case was discussed
In 2005, after Katrina, the trees of St. Joseph Abbey were damaged. The monks needed a new source of revenue, so they decided to make and market the caskets they used to bury their own dead.
The state board of embalmers and funeral directors, run itself by funeral directors, got word of the monks’ activities.
The state board informed St. Joseph’s abbey that if they wanted to sell caskets, the monks needed to
A) earn 30 hrs of college credits
B) spend 1 year as apprentices at licensed funeral home
C) abbey would have been required to become a funeral establishment
D)install an entire embalming facility at their abbey, even though they only wanted to make caskets

What kind of questions are on it, quantum physics?

The main one is, "did you pay us?"

Louisiana lawyers been doing it forever.
Still holding onto the “civil law” thing to make it harder for lawyers from other states to be admitted tot he bar or at least foe them to think they have to hire la attorneys

But the huge amounts of money the Louisiana doctors threw at stopping the Nurse practitioner’s Bill was all about public safety

Louisiana has a irrigation license requirement to install irrigation in residential yards.
Almost all of the test questions are related to agricultural requirements because there was no difference in the State's eyes to the two.
Also, once licensed you were still not allowed to hook into the water system. Need a licensed plumber to do that.

Sorry but when I piss the ole lady off and have to buy flowers I expect them to last at least a week. Can’t risk buying some bootleg hydrangeas from Sandy the snake oil salesman

Biggest thug scam ever was our legislature forcing people to by caskets only from funeral homes at a 500% markup. It’s all rigged. Folla the dolla

bullshite. Grocery stores sell poultry and red meat, vegetables, hygiene products, canned goods, alcohol, baked goods; etc., none of which is under legal jurisdiction of the horticulture commission.

Like every other license in LA, the test probably consisted of legal, ethics, and business questions.
Louisiana does a great job at impeding commerce and it's only getting worse every year.

Try to sell 4 wheelers, boats, or UTV’s in Louisiana and get yourself a taste of the LMVC! It’s like dealing with the mafia and none of them have more than a 4th grade education. But what they do have is power! And they’ll make it as damn hard as possible to do business in Louisiana.

I bet you the Heromans have something to do with this. They are crooked people.

Did you know that if you want to remodel a mobile home now, not only do you have to get local building permits, but you now have to get a permit and inspection from the state fire marshal?
This was always the case for multi-family but it's utterly useless for mobile homes.
It's under the Louisiana Manufactured Housing Commission at the Office of State Fire Marshal.

This might be the dumbest thing I've read on the OT ever. Not taking into consideration reciprocity rules, every state requires an attorney to pass its bar exam to practice in the state. You think Louisiana's long standing civil law history has been a 200+ year conspiracy to keep other lawyers from getting licensed in this state?

This is an incredibly ignorant take. I would say more, but jfw already covered it.
