Apparently yesterday many teachers in the Washington parish school system voiced their displeasure of lack of pay increase by staging a 1-day strike. Schools were canceled but they went back today.

It has been reported by WWL-TV that the teachers have not received a raise since 1978. The school board just passed the 2024 budget last Thursday, which included raises for school board staff, but no raises for teachers, custodians, school bus drivers, school admin etc.

Damn.. I am originally from F-town and this is totally embarassing.

Hate to hurt the kids, but the strike needed to be longer than a day. A pay raise for school board staff but not for the teachers is ridiculous.

This is 100% false and it’s borderline embarrassing that anyone believes it

There is no way it's been since 1978. Are they making $5000/yr

Don’t they get some pay raises via the state government and not just the local parishes?

1978? That’s a travesty. Pay these dedicated educators.

From WDSU article:

Many told WDSU, they have not received a raise from the school system in years, and some have even worked for the system for decades.

School bus driver Pepe Tate says he has worked for the system for nearly 47 years and only received one raise in his career.

WDSU

ETA: Apparently they have received some 1 time stipends from the state a few times, but nothing from the school board.

I’m assuming they mean no parish funded raises, only state

Some workers tell Fox 8 they bring home less than $1,000 a month and are unable to keep up with inflation.

It wasn't the teachers, it was pretty much everyone else

Employees of the school district told Fox 8 on Monday night that school bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, and other support employees planned to stage a walkout and protest for higher pay outside the school district’s offices starting at 9 a.m.

Keith Giles, a school board member with authority over the parish’s 10 public schools, joined dozens of workers who stayed off the job in their push for higher pay.

The Washington school superintendent says classes will resume Wednesday with the help of bus drivers from neighboring parishes, however, protestors say they will be back in front of the school board offices at 9 a.m. Until the money is found, protestors say their work stoppage will continue. Varnado says only three cafeteria workers turned up to feed students across the parish on Tuesday.

All teachers have received raises from the Stste since then. She may be talking about from the Parish.

1978 is false. They are sensationalizing their talking points. BTW this is mostly dietary staff, paras and bus drivers. Probably 75-80% of teachers were in school today.

ETA. The school board has not done a good job with this at all and deserves scrutiny but to keep kids out of school over this is not popular with the community. The actual community not the cesspool of ignorance called facebook.

If George Washington came back from the dead, his first order of business would be to ask that his name was removed from that Parish.

The same would also be true for Benjamin Franklin and Franklinton.
