DC had a program that randomly gave poor parents $10,800, taken as a lump sum or 12 monthly payments. What did they do with the money?
Blew it all on a trip to Miami.

Saleemia Quigley regrets that she splurged, wishes she took the monthly payments instead. Penn professor says that giving them money is part of a larger system of oppression when they behave irresponsibly.
And then they extended the program another year.

So the OUTCOME turns it to an oppressive system? So the same exact system, administered the same exact way, is not oppressive if there is no negative outcome?

There's a down under joke somewhere within this hall-of-fame name.

Synopsis: unearned money doesn't make people magically become more financially independent nor fiscally responsible, but it makes them feel better (briefly) so we should definitely do it permanently (just ignore the whole stimmy-checks/inflation thingy).

She had pursued a bachelor's degree in social work but paused her own education to focus on her growing family.
There’s a whole lot of bad choices in there, yet the reporter tries to portray her as some kinds of martyr.

What makes that family atypical? What do you believe the typical family did with the money?

And that's why a lot of people are in the situation they are in. Its all about managing. Whether its your money, your life, etc it all comes down to managing.
If you get x amount of money a month you figure out how much you can spend on a place to live, food, gas, car note, etc, but there are too many vices out there that people can't control themselves. And they have never been taught because they always find away to get just enough to get by so when you give them a lump sum, they don't know what to do.. especially if it gives them an opportunity to do shite they want to do.
And as I am typing this, it makes me think about when I was younger.. teenager I guess. I was always curious as to home people who were poor was always able to find money for cigarettes. I know cigarettes are addictive, but it shows you that people will always find away to get what they really want.
They will go without certain things in order to feed that addiction. There needs to be away to flip that around.

So what’s lost in all this is that whatever the money was spent on Can and should be achieved through actually working, being responsible about when and how many children you have, but of course we’re not gonna suggest people should have to work to get things.
