That should depend on the situation and a balance of risk calculation. If it’s a murderer on a rampage, you’d have to give chase. If it’s a stolen car, it would depend.

In utopia, it would depend. Here in reality, you have .034 seconds to make that risk calculation. Choose wrong, and your wife gets to tell your children that you'll never be coming home.

The difference between a stolen car, and a murderer on the rampage can be literally less than a second. How long does it take to make a bad decision that costs someone their lives? And if it is going to cost someone their lives, shouldn't it be the shitbag criminal?

I’m not blaming these cops, I’m saying the protocol seems wrong.

Wait, the bank robber and car thief is dead? Seems like the protocol is just fine

Oh I agree. I was honestly just wondering

Dude, this isn’t Minority Report. We can’t kill people based on what they might do.

You are seriously asking if a shooting is justified based off of someone’s race?

Never said that, maybe you should read op again without your race glasses on.

police officers to giving them blanket approval to kill people
It is like that for anyone, but cops use it all the time. You can kill anyone you want if you fear for you life. Granted you need to prove it, but these cops are pussies if they feared for their life of a slow arse truck coming at them when they could easily get out of the way. Plenty of cops have seem to have blood lust and the plenty of police forces have shown to not hire the people who score high on their tests. Sure blacks get mowed down all the time but they seem to be the poorest on avg and therefore the most likely to steal (definitely don't make it right, unless it is for hunger and only that, and we ain't talking about some obese whale stealing food).

There was a white teen who meeting a undercover cop to buy some weed (maybe a quarter or half) and didn't know the guy was a cop. So when the dude busts out with a gun, the white teen (who is in his car) speeds of out of the parking lot. But the cop who was at the rear of the vehicle, shot many shots at the car and eventually hitting the kid and killing him. The autopsy showed it was shot from the back. That is fricking murder, 100%. No way a cop should be able to murder someone because they don't listen to him or run off. If some perp pulls a gun or knife out that is different. But a lot of cops get into it to fulfill their blood lust. Don't even get me started on cops killing animals for fun.

Everyone knows you empty your magazine. You can’t mix new bullets out of a box with old bullets already in the magazine.

No. These baws took out a guy who had decided that the only way he could exist in society was by harming other people.

Engage in a chase that could endanger the lives and property of innocent civilians?

No. Even if he only hits some poor student's 1976 Honda Civic. He chose to no longer live within the society that we have all built. They didn't allow him to create another victim.

Yeah, he guns it and runs over cops before they can react to move. Brilliant logic there, sunshine.

Because the law gives LEO the authority and responsibility to stop and apprehend people committing crimes.

And they have the right to defend themselves if their life is threatened or endangered.

See Graham v. Conor.

Y’all out here saying “don’t tread on me” out of one side of your mouths and “comply or die” out of the other.

Wanting cops to be able to kill people not based on what they are actually doing but on what they might do.
That’s how Randy Weavers wife got her head blown off and how a bunch of women and children were incinerated at Waco.

You don’t get to shoot anyone in a car just because they could possibly hit you

First of all, the law cannot justify itself. There must be some higher basis for the law or it’s all just a sham.

As they obviously should, and we don’t need a court to tell us that.

The gray area is what counts as threatening or endangering their lives, and you can’t give them blanket approval on that unless you trust cops a lot more than anyone should.

Graham v. Conor upheld the right for them to defend themselves and set forth a guide on how to look at the gray area of what is justifiable.

It isnt a blanket approval....it is a litmus test for what is justified and what is not.

I've only seen a couple that I didn't find to be justified, but this can be added to the list.

The cop could have taken three steps to the left to be 100% safe. It is not reasonable that he feared for his life, and property is never worth someone's life.

Mark my redneck, white arse in the unjustified column.

It isn't a blanket approval in theory, but what about in practice?

ITT it's a blanket approval. I realize I'm pissing in the wind, I just hate to see supposed freedom-loving people pissing on their own rights just because they don't care about the people who are feeling the effects of shifting paradigms of policing (if those paradigms have shifted as they seem to have to me).
