A new study proposes that a solar flare could have contributed to the sinking of Titanic by interfering with its navigation. It also may have contributed to the poor rescue response after distress signals were sent.

Popular Mechanics article on the study

quote:

Just when we think we know everything there is to know about the Titanic—unsinkable ship, giant iceberg, "I'm the king of the world," etc.—along comes fascinating new research that raises big questions about what really transpired on the fateful night of April 14, 1912. Did a weather fluke from space actually cause the Titanic to sink?

quote:

The new study's key finding is that the northern hemisphere was in the grips of a “moderate to severe” magnetic storm that night, which could have altered the Titanic’s navigational readings, affecting both its planned course and the information the crew shared about their location during SOS signals.
The idea is pretty simple. The sun, which is powered by an innate nuclear dynamo that’s burning at millions of degrees, is covered with sunspots. These, in turn, are punctuated by giant explosions the size of the Earth or even larger: solar flares.

Why can't people just accept it was like 1910 and the cause was an iceberg

I think it may have sunk due to smashing against the giant fricking iceberg.

I'll take Cameron's word for it. He had to have done some research. Jack and Rose... you can't fake that.

It was the massive amounts of water leaking into its hull.

I have a wild idea, but it cannot be proven.

The watchman that was supposed to be watching for icebergs was getting his knob polished in the crow’s nest by some lass or gent he snuck up there from 3rd class.

Also, the construction failures with bad welds and bad rivets. A poor design, lack of sufficient life rafts, and ill prepared crew probably didn’t help the situation.

Water carried over the fire bulkheads. They didn’t build the bulkheads all the way to the top floors because the designer’s thought it wasn’t aesthetically pleasing for first class. Had they been built all the way to the top, the ship could have closed shut all the sections that were ripped open by the iceberg and not flooded the whole ship.

What happened with an iceberg in 1910?

I thought it was also due to some brittle steel used in the construction of the hull

Whatever it was that caused it to sink, it was definitely Donald Trump's fault.

Jet fuel can't melt steel beams and Ice can't cut steel.
