Then perhaps they should have.

The U.S. had long before broken the Japanese codes and knew that these negotiations were under way, knew that the Japanese had for months been trying to find a way to surrender.

All they had to do was agree to an unconditional surrender.

They didnt want that until after the bomb.

Necessary?

Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine?

No. But it’s sterile, and I like the taste.

Japan was not going to give up just after losing their outer islands. They were going to force us to have to invade the mainland. The Japanese had an honor code for all of the civilians to take up arms as well and fight back. It would have been devastating for our army. Many predicted a loss of close to 1 million. Macarthur was going to fall right into that trap too because he wanted the glory of his army winning the war on the Pacific front. He was trying to convince our leaders that we would only lose about 200,000 soldiers. He was pissed that the bombs were getting dropped.

I believe it was absolutely necessary to drop them to save American lives because Macarthur believed that our men were expendable for his own glory.

Oh really? Then why didn't they surrender? Why did it take another 9 days after the first atomic bomb dropped and 6 days after the 2nd one for them to finally surrender? Sounds like the Japanese wanted to keep fighting but reluctantly surrendered after seeing how devastating the Americans' new weapon was and how they could do nothing to defend themselves from it.

You know how many US soldiers would have been killed if we would have gone to war with Japan? A LOT. So I will say it was the right choice.

Of course they would have eventually surrendered.

The salient question is when they would have surrendered.

Could we have defeated them without dropping the A-Bomb?

Yes.
From a strictly binary win/loss analysis of the outcome of the war...the dropping of the A-Bomb was "unnecessary".

Would there been additional loss of American lives had the A-Bomb(s) not been dropped? Almost certainly. Of course there's no way to know for sure, but the fact that Japan didn't surrender after we nuked Hiroshima should clue you in to the fact that they would have fought at least one battle to defend their homeland.

From that perspective, dropping the A-Bombs was necessary in order to end the war as quickly as possible and save as many of our own soldiers' lives as we can..even if that means our soldiers lives come at the expense of the Japanese civilians lives. It was a war they started, that's the price they paid.

He's a famous liar. He lied repeatedly to try and get the pine tree removed from the 17th hole fairway at Augusta National

I’m not attributing a lie to anyone, I’m saying that Japan would not have just laid down their arms and surrendered without an invasion or the a-bomb. Those were the options.
