Or, did he not really become a "household name" until after his downfall?
Bro, he ran and won a parliament seat. He then, had his own personal army physically take over parliament fighting off government tanks and effectively taking over parliament after he was thrown out. Yea, anyone who grew up in the 80's knew who he was before his downfall. It was effectively our "reality tv" before reality tv.

It’s great, practically immersive.

In the early 80s he was always the elusive target of Sonny and Tubbs on Miami Vice…

Carlos Lehder Rivas always said that if he got extradited he would knock of a Federal Judge each week until he was freed.
The week after they extradited hm I brought two Fedeal Judges fishing with me. I made two targets out of paper plates with a string to hang around their neck. I made one for me that said “ I am not a judge. Shoot them.” They laughed.
I knew three different pilots that flew to Colombia to pick up loads. One landed in Panama at the military base. He worked for Seal.

Yes. Yes he was. I knew who he was when I graduated in 1989, as the previous poster who graduated in ‘90.

A really good book is "Killing Pablo" by Mark Bowden. If you are interested in Pablo it is must reading.

The series, El Patron de Mal, is an 80 episode series about Pablo created in Columbia by some of his victims family and his son. It has subtitles and is more accurate than Narcos, though I enjoyed Narcos too.
He was arguably more powerful than the Colombian government at one time.

The US govt allowed him to become what he became then we did everything possible to get rid of him until there was nothing left to do but kill him. Our guys stood over him and took pictures like he was a deer. And gave the Colombians credit for the kill. Lots of interesting stories surrounding Pablo. From CIA ties to an overpopulation of Hippos ravaging the forests in Colombia.

The DEA (CIA?) kept a small plane(s) in the air 24/7 over Medellin with sophisticated cellular tracking technology for the day listening for his phone. He made a call to his son just a bit longer than 2 minutes, the time needed to triangulate his position, location established game over.

quote:My take was he had everything money could buy, but he was trapped in a open prison because of how he got the money. Rich but not free. Free in the sense he could just go anywhere and do anything he wanted.
At his peak, his net worth was rumored to be in excess of $30 billion.

The 4 hippos he brought to Columbia have grown to over 100.
His enduring legacy will be an evasive heard of hippos in South America.

Real big deal in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
Watch narco and read killing Pablo.
The guy was a machine. He was known to show up at street level drug deals in the US to let dealers know who they were ultimately dealing with…

One of the best scenes in Narcos was when some worker thought Pablo was dead, and told a room full of men they didn’t have to pay Pablo anymore.
Pablo then walked in… the tension in that scene was off the charts.

didn't think that anything could ever top The Wire for me
The Wire is my favorite. I am halfway through season2 of sopranos and could walk away from it right now. In fact it has been a month since the last episode I watched.
I will check out zero zero zero.
