Was Foosball ever really that much fun?

Out of all the arcade and bar table top games, this has to be one of the most frustrating ones.
The effort you put in is not as rewarding as say something like Air Hockey.

Yes assuming you play no spins

Asteroids, man, Asteroids...

Now that I think about it, you’re right.
Every time I see a Foosball table, I inevitably walk over and play for a second with whoever I’m with thinking it’ll be fun. It takes maybe 3 spins to once again realize I actually hate playing it
It’s like being tricked into getting Panda Express for the thousandth time because it smells good at the mall, and eating half of it while feeling like shite afterwards like every other time.

That’s a completely subjective, out of the blue statement. There’s a nice feeling about blasting a foosball past the goalie so hard that it sounds like it may have cracked the board at the back of the goal.
I always found it more enjoyable playing with four players instead of two.

For those of us that deployed in the early days of the GWOT... 100%

No spins is essential.

it was fun when i played as a middle schooler, going full send on spinning the players and seeing how hard i could hit the ball. the satisfaction of a fully spin-powered slam of the ball into the back of the goal is unrivaled. i found out later that "serious" players dont spin and that it's more of a finesse game, at which point i changed my mind to "foosball sucks"

Not as an arcade game but if one of your buddies had a table at their place it was on!

Exactly. If you play spins it's like shooting pool and allowing garbage shots... No bueno.

I got really good at foosball and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Foosball was awesome back in the day. I dominated my daycare at that shite, and air hockey too.

So much more fun than air hockey tbh.

Because spins should only be used by people who are playing at daycare. How did you actually see the playing surface?

Growing up, our neighbor across the street was an older kid who was the coolest kid around. He had somehow gotten an arcade quality fooseball table that he kept under the carport and would let us younger kids play.
He had one strict rule enforced with militant discipline: "no spinning". I played hours and hours on that table and got pretty good.
Fast forward to college in the late 80's at LSU. The Bengal had a table just like the one across the street. I sucked at pool, but with a good partner I could sit on that table all night and dominate. There was this middleeastern cat name Mo (probably short for Mohammad now that I think about it) was was lightning fast and played the middle 5 like they were an extension of his arm. I would team with him, running defense and goalie and we were nearly unstoppable.
It was a game that was a lot less common than pool so most people had no experience playing and got their asses kicked by guys like me. So for them, it was not fun. I think it also had a steeper learning curve to even get kinda good.
But for players, it was a blast.

Getting 2-4 good players was entertaining to watch, but for most of us not fun to play.

BASEketball was about as fun.
