My dad had a 35 acre pond with 500-600 traps back in the late 90's early 2000's. During Holy week we would catch between 700-1000# on the Tuesday and around 400-600# the next 3 days.
There is a lot to get started. Once you have a pond with levees, you need to be able to pump water in and out. Cages aren't cheap. You can make your own but that takes a lot of time. Back then we used to buy bags of bait for around 7 dollars for 50#, now it is around 26 dollars. It took us 3 bags to bait all of our cages. We also used shad for bait. We never planted rice, the pond was in an old cow pasture and the "Pifeen" (don't know what it is really called) grass would grow when we would dry. It is great feed for the crawfish.

A guy I work with has a 12 acre bass lake he converted to a crawfish pond
He’s catching about 700 pounds a week right now. He runs traps after
work and sells to locals
I’ve helped him a few times. He works his arse off.

This seems like something I might want to do. How big is the pond?
I've only walked it once, but I'm guessing it's around 100x100?

Why wouldn't you also farm corn and potatoes? Aint nobody putting no rice in the crawfish pot. Good luck.
Uh… you need to read up on crawfish farming in Louisiana then come back here and beg for forgiveness. Here’s a hint: You can’t raise crawfish in a corn field or potato patch. “Good luck”.

My cousin has a farm in Church Pointe. It’s right at 2k acres and he does well. It’s back and forth between crawfish and rice.

I crawfished 80 acres in the early 2000s for side money with my buddy's dad. He told me that if I started out buying land, pumps, land work, crawfish etc, that I wouldn't recoup my money.
That's any farming set up, zero way to pencil out getting into farming new.

2014 LSU Ag Center Projected Costs & Returns Crawfish
Just add 10 years of inflation to the projected costs in the budgets - unfortunately the AgCenter didn’t replace these ag economists when they retired - left for another job because of budget constraints, nor did they re-assign another ag economist to keep the budgets updated/current.
Like any other business/ag enterprise - some do very well, others make a some profit, others go belly up in time…..
