I can't think of an athlete that is as truly good and inspirational human being like Warrick Dunn. Great football player and even better human being. My all time favorite athlete since he was at FSU.

If you aren't familiar with his story you should spend some time and read about what happened to him and how he came to handle it over the years, including raising his 5 siblings after his mother was murdered when he was 18. Gives you some faith in mankind during times like these.

agree completely....Dunn is a stand-up guy and you can't help but pull for him in life...

Warrick Dunn gets it. Sorry he had to suffer that tragedy, but he's a real man.

11 yr old article but you get the point ......

FSU article on Warrick and his NFL MOY award

Feb. 4, 2005

The National Football League today announced that Warrick Dunn, running back for the NFC South Division Champion Atlanta Falcons, was named the 2004 Walter Payton Man of the Year.

The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, named after the legendary Chicago Bears running back who died in 1999, is the only league award that recognizes a player's off-the-field community service as well as his playing excellence

. Through his "Warrick Dunn Foundation," Dunn has had the opportunity to positively affect thousands of people in the communities that have shaped his life.

Through his "Homes for the Holidays" program, Dunn helps single mothers become first-time homeowners by making the down payments on new fully-furnished homes. To date, Dunn's program has assisted 52 single mothers and profoundly touched the lives of 135 children and dependents in Atlanta, Tampa and Baton Rouge. Dunn launched the program during his rookie season in 1997, when he made the down payments on four homes in Tampa. His motivation for the program stems from the memory of his mother, Betty Smothers, a Baton Rouge police officer and single parent. She was killed in the line of duty in 1993, before she could ever realize her dream of buying her own home.

"My mom inspired me to do what she did in her life - help others," said Dunn. "People say I'm giving back, but I think I'm getting a lot more than what I put in. We can all make the world a little better by doing just a little bit with whatever we have to offer. "

"Warrick is a person who understands his responsibility not only as a professional football player, but as a man and community servant," said Arthur M. Blank, owner & CEO of the Atlanta Falcons. "Every sports team - and every professional athlete - should take a page from his book. We are all in a position to step up and be leaders in philanthropy."

I gained immense and permanent respect for Dunn when I learned years ago of his charity that helps single parent families purchase homes.

After the tragedy he experienced he made it his mission to help other families in tough situations have a roof over their head.

For children, teenagers, and single parents something as simple as having a solid living situation can make make a tremendous difference in their day to day confidence and attitude, which in turn impacts their thinking and actions, and can influence their path in life.

I am slightly embarrassed that I have not yet made a donation to his charity even though I have been aware of it for years.

Warrick Dunn is a good man. Even if he played for the Falcons.

Refreshing to see that a Black single mother of 6 isn't blindly criticized here as usual.

Not the typical pointing out how Betty Smothers & her son Warrick Dunn or Derrick Green don't have the last names.

Smothers did a fine job.
