I know it isn't your fault, but that really isn't an excuse. I've worked as a cook in a restaurant before. there should be a system in place to aid with getting the apps out before the entre. On our tickets it labeled what was expected as an app so that we knew to give the entre a little time.

99% of the time the apps are out first

That 1% of the time something either went wrong in the kitchen or the person ordered an entree that has little prep time.

For example the other night we had a major thunderstorm roll through with 3 power outages which took the ticket printers and POS systems offline. This obviously caused ticket times to go over 30 minutes.

How would this be my fault as a server? Most customers understood but there were some tables either making unreasonable demands and/or not tipping because of it.

You obviously haven't worked in a kitchen or restraunt before

99% of the time the appetizers come out before the entree. Most of our appetizers come out in 5 minutes, entrees around 15-20 minutes.

But when you order something like a club sandwich that takes 2 minutes to make, that can be run before the appetizer.

Then you know what you do?

You put in the entree that takes two minutes to come out AFTER the appetizer is done.

I've worked at restaurants with and without electronic computers to place orders for the kitchen. It ain't hard.

You obviously haven't worked in one that had a functioning expiditor.

No offense, but you aren't a good server if you actually think it's okay for someone to get their app after their entree.

It has happened to me ONCE in 4 weeks!

I think people are assuming that it happens all the time in my restraunt. It has happened to me one time.

, you can do it. Pretend in your brain that they ordered the app only. Then ring it in. Then a little while later, pretend they just ordered the entrees. And ring them in.

But you were bitching about not being tipped well due to that...and it seems like most people agree that it was a fair reason for the customer to be mad.

We didn't even HAVE an expiditor at Dempseys. No food runners, no expiditors, no busboys, no hosts... yet between the cooks and servers, we managed to figure out how to time people's apps and entrees

the dish he named points to Cheddar's. The clientel that place attracts isn't conductive to good tipping. Cheddar's also gives you 24 onion rings in a tower.

Correct this is where I work.

I work at one in Iowa and its a test run for the company's new re-branding innitiative. We just opened a month ago and they are trying to re-brand the entire chain, and my restraunt is the first one.

Keep in mind we just opened a month ago and there has been some turnover so far and our kitchen is still trying to get up to speed.

I would have never thought about working at one in Texas because I had a low opinion of the place but after seeing the location and how good of a job they did on the exterior and interior of the building as well as the rebranding innitiatives I bought in.

I worked there part time 4-5 nights a week in June and made over $2000 in tips alone for the month. Doing well so far.

There's no reason someone shouldn't be able to order both at the same time and get them in the correct order.

This is what I am talking about.
But apparently I don't know jack about how restaurants work.

Its not the number of times its happened, its that you:
a) continually make an excuse for it
and
b) bitched about not getting tipped for it

newsflash:
a) there is no excuse
b) its a perfectly acceptable reason not to tip
