War of Triple Alliance. Not much since I believe

There was a brief war between Ecuador and Peru in 1941 that has since flared back up to varying degrees as late as the 1990s.

I am being 100% serious. I know very little about South America. I mean, I know the countries an all, but I need to take some time and read up on politics, because it seems like things down there can have a bigger impact on us than I once thought.

If it was up to me, after the military booted the illegals we’d move on Alberta & Saskatchewan. Someone needs to save them from that Satanic dictator Trudeau

Guyana is twice as big as Louisiana land-wise but only has 800 thousand people. Why so sparsely populated?

Was a super poor country until oil discoveries the last couple of years. Tons of US companies opened up shop there recently

True with a different administration. With the current cesspool not so much.

Having the Navy and Marines slap around a tin pot South American dictator would give Biden and his handlers the "wartime President" street cred just in time for the election with very little risk. Militarily and politically, Venezuela is some pretty low hanging fruit.

Venezuela is all by its lonesome on this. Cuba is taking Guyana's side and Russia is staying out of it.

They’re taking the Dave Chappelle approach to Foreign Policy. “ never get between a man and his paper”

Anyone know the answer to the most important question; how is this going to affect Demerara Rum production and availability?

Ha same. And knew about the Peru/Bolivia war because I’ve been to the atacama desert which switch hands as a result. As it was described to me at the time by a Chilean “our 4 ships beat their 4 ships”

Even these late 1880s South American wars just don’t have anywhere near the scale of euro/Asian conflicts.

It’s really quite remarkable no one in South America has gotten meaningfully belligerent with a neighbor in 140 years.

Did Monroe do this? What’s going on? It’s not like South America is some peaceful place.

True. But when they do fight it's bloody as hell though, eg The War of the Triple Alliance and the Chaco War.

The territory Venezuela is going after (presumably) is sparsely populated, very dense rainforest. It’s extremely difficult to invade - there are some navigable water ways but not much. They only want it for the oil, gold, and copper deposits. The media calls it a border dispute but it’s damn near 2/3rds of the entire territory of Guyana.

They’d have to have an air war. And they aren’t prepared for that given who will be defending that territory. Brazil and the US would get involved.

This would be very stupid for Venezuela to try. But I think their socialist state has almost completely collapsed and they are desperate for new resources to exploit. They need something to unite their people so they don’t overthrow their own government.

Sounds like Argentina and the Falklands War in the early 80s.

They didn’t think a major power would show up to shove missiles up their asses and take losses over a few sparsely populated islands.

Basically, South America is the opposite of the Middle East. The entire region is united under the same religion (Catholicism), and the overwhelming majority speak one of two languages (Portuguese or Spanish). The borders weren’t drawn by the British, Ottomans, or Russians to purposefully pit tribes against each other to be more easily exploited, so the borders actually make sense. Most countries in South America have significant natural features (raging rivers, massive mountain ranges, dense jungles) that make their borders extremely defensible. There’s not a ton of oil rich countries, pretty much just Venezuela and Guyana, with Brazil having some reserves but not enough to be a major exporter. In addition, many nations purposely interbred their disparate tribal and colonial populations in order to create a Mestizo culture, further eroding tribalism and creating greater social unity.
