Walmart is the absolute shittiest business in this country. Do not patronize them. They represent every damn thing that’s wrong with the USA.

I never understood this level of corporate greed. I think in 2004, when a murder happened inside the photo studio at the Houma Walmart on MLK which was located in the General Merchandise entrance, Walmart tried to keep it open while deputies were on the scene. The guy deputies were looking for fled and was captured at a local motel on New Orleans Boulevard a few hours later.

Most Walmarts are mostly hourly workers and a big Walmart will employ 600+ so any given time there is 200+ working. You can call it corporate greed, but you shut the store down and you are likely causing 100+ people to lose their paid shift that day. Just saying it’s not always about the company.

I have no clue how walk in ovens work, but I’m going to assume there’s a lot more to this story because it’s like impossible to get locked into a walk in freezer these days so an oven is likely even harder.

Trying to understand how this person didn't get out of the oven, given that fight or flight instincts surely would've kicked in right? I mean, were they baked out of their mind on their shift or something?

Not quite as big as it used to be. Some have shrunk their layout in favor of a distribution type model.

In the 1990’s when the Galliano Supercenter opened it had a full bakery and donut makers. Some people even suspect Walmart pirated and hired former famous Dufrene Bakery workers for the store. Of course some of that was a loss leader as they had hot French bread for a dollar, hot glazed dozen donuts for a dollar too. They even had a window where you could watch what was going on in the large bakery.

Sadly over time, fresh bakery items were replaced with frozen/defrosted items from a distribution center. In fact the bakery was trimmed down so much they centralized their hard liquor items like an in store liquor store.

They still have hot French bread, but as with most items it is smaller and they don’t bake as much.

Not an attorney, but to get paid wouldn't their legal team need to prove some sort of negligence on Walmart first.

The fact that this can and has actually happened is proof in and of itself that they are at fault somewhere along the way. Whether it be in documented training or lack of, is that training adequate, does it address this specific hazard and how to prevent it, was lock out/tag out used, do they even have an energy isolation procedure, documented training on that, the list can go on and on about things they should have in place if someone's job duties include entering a freaking oven for any reason.

Trust me, they're paying.

In the U.S., this would be some workers compensation death benefit payment (though in Texas the employee can recover punitive damages for wrongful death - but only punitive damages).

So, in the U.S., they would get far less than they would get if someone loses their job because of sex, race, etc.

Trust me, they’re not if it’s workers comp in the US.

The only kind I have ever seen that could be described as "walk-in" are industrial curing ovens for some type of coatings/paint.

My local Walmart hast these really tall ovens with racks that snake up and down. But it's only like 3 rows deep and has small doors that you certainly couldn't walk through. Their bakery ovens aren't placed where they can be seen by the public so maybe they have one. I doubt it though.

Because it’s a fricking active fricking investigation. For the entire fricking store.

Everything that happened in that store that day will be scrutinized.

Jesus Christ, people don’t think their shite through

Are you this dense? Should they shut the gas station down outside? Let’s just shut the city down, shite every customer inside needs to be in lock down and anyone that bought something that day? Where does it stop?

This was more than likely a suicide, murder, horrible foul play, or an incredibly stupid or incredibly unlikely bad luck. These commercial ovens and freezers usually have multiple safety measures built into them and are fairly dummy proof.

I guess that depends on what you consider "getting paid. They may get some low 6 figure settlement on top of the WC to go away as a "nuisance fee" from Walmart to avoid the publicity & legal fees of fighting this through court; but the burden of proof could be too difficult to overcome unless there is some documentation of malfunction or negligence that Walmart ignored.

TIL Walmart has walk-in ovens.

Walk-in oven is a misnomer. They are tall ovens that you can roll big racks into two or three at a time, but they are not meant to be walked into…because they are fricking ovens. I bought a couple at a closed down Walmart estate sale dirt cheap and flipped them for a hefty profit.

And if you’re wondering, no. They do not do rotisserie chickens in the bread ovens
