Too much variance within any state just to group it all into one. Maybe small states like Connecticut it doesn't matter.
But in more spread out states, there's a monstrous difference between some parts of states.
For example, southern Illinois is not remotely comparable to downtown Chicago.
In any of the above categories.

Exactly. All these lists and rankings are BS. If you live in Birmingham, AL, you probably have access to better health care than any of the places listed at the top.

California being 18 and Arkansas being ranked 41 does not match my fairly substantial anecdotal evidence in the matter.

We’re getting overrun with Yankees here, so pretty soon that “ Affordability” sadly may more resemble the crap holes these retirees are fleeing.

I’ve got a long way to go, but if I were to retire tomorrow, the Shenandoah Valley of VA would be top choice.

These lists are always so stupid and arbitrary.

The healthcare available for Mississippians is going to be understated if you’re only looking at in state options.
A lot of people in north Mississippi have easy access to Memphis, and that’s where many go for the more highly specialized procedures and you also have some of the best children’s hospitals you could hope for.

In Mississippi, it HIGHLY depends on which area you live in.
That's going to be the case for most states out there.
Retiring in Memphis is much different than retiring in the Smoky Mountains.

Virginia #1, lol.
So what do you have against Va being at the top of the list? I've been here 30 years after moving from Red Stick / LSU and love it. Weather is fairly moderate w solid change of seasons and a little snow. 80's up here for the next 10 days, although somewhat humid. Lots to do w DC and other big cities fairly close. Three hours to the Outer Banks. Mountains for hiking, riding, etc. We get season passes to a ski resort two hours from here (no, it's not a great one, but it works). Serious whitewater all within 1-3 hours from me. The Bay for sailing, fishing. Great schools and QOL. They are building lots of retirement communities around here, more down toward Williamsburg. Doesn't bother me.
Only thing it doesn't have is LSU sports.

So the place where all the fed gov employees work is the best place to retire. Totally a coincidence.

Virginia is a really nice place. I visited in November for a work trip and legitimately looked at the housing and job market afterwards.
Nothing panned out but I can see why people go there.

Can’t see a bunch of blue hairs wanting to live out their remaining days in Minnesota or North & South Dakota. Freezing your arse off 6 months out of year just doesn’t appeal to me.

Well, that just falls into Tennessee.
Or if in South Mississippi they go to Oschner in Louisiana.

Affordability is not rated high enough. I moved from VA to TN. VA has a lot to do, but taxes are better in TN and is easier on my wallet. You can get good healthcare in any state.

Most of those states at the top feature winters that would be daunting for an elderly person to endure.
this forum wildly overstates the "brutality" of winters

And in a state like Wyoming or South Dakota you might have to drive 150 miles to a doctor appointment.
And you might only drive 2 miles. That’s the upside of getting to pick where in a state you want to live.
