Subscriptions. Subscriptions. It seems they are hard to escape these days. The average UK citizen, for instance, juggles three subscriptions per month for everything from video streaming to meal kits. Well, if you are one of those people and you buy a Volkswagen, that number might be about to become four, at least if you want to unlock the full power of the Volkswagen car you just bought. According to Volkswagen, this optional power upgrade for its electric ID.3 range in the UK comes in at around £16.50 per month or £165 annually. A customer can also choose a £649 "lifetime" subscription, but that is tied to the car, not the individual. If you sell your car and buy another ID.3, you would have to pay the fee again. Paying for the upgrade will increase the horsepower of the ID.3 Pro and Pro S models from their standard 201bhp to the full 228bhp the hardware is capable of delivering. Volkswagen, in a statement to the BBC, defended the decision by claiming the ability to purchase more power was "nothing new".

I really dislike the move to subscription based products.

have you seen that new apple carplay+ or whatever?

apple taking over the entire dash of the vehicle (tach, speedometer, etc.)

and car makers are already balking becuase i think they see things like "want to see your tire pressure in real time? subscribe to TPM Pro for $1.99/mo to see your tire pressure and get notifications anytime!"

Clown world. Imagine paying $70k for a battery car and having to pay additional monthly fees to use it to full potential.

Is that like VW+?

Just like TV, they're always out there trying to make a buck.

VW makes a really good vehicle but if I wanted an EV, it wouldn't be a VW

That number is easily a quarter of what I would expect.

Same car, same motor, different levels of available use after purchase...

... must of been a female engineer.

I like my paid off car. I sure hope I can buy another when I’m ready and my radio, camera, etc. work without subscriptions. Imagine having to pay fees for things that should work in a vehicle.

You ain't gotta pay $750k for one, you can pay $35k for a 25 HP JD and find the same thing is true....not to the same extent but certainly to some degree. I just bought a tractor and it kept me from buying a JD. Mine won't have the resell value but it was about 3/5 the price and will do more than a JD or Kubota without hacks to either one....my FIL willl easily lift almost twice the comparable weight of either one with factory settings....

This is like that Black Mirror episode where the lady has brain surgery and they charge her a monthly subscription so she can function.
