Vultures falling from the sky into the Gulf of America

Vultures falling from the sky in the Gulf of Mexico near lslamorada is a strange but natural occurrence, often caused by changes in the weather. These birds rely on warm air currents, or thermals, to stay airborne. If the wind shifts suddenly or there's a lack of these updrafts, they can lose the lift they need to fly.
During storms or extreme weather, they can even become disoriented or weak from sudden drops in temperature or pressure, which can cause them to fall.
In short, it's usually a mix of weather factors-like shifting winds or a lack of thermals-that leads to vultures dropping from the sky in this area.

Kind of unrelated to the thread, but people would be surprised how heavy these damn birds are.
I remember when I was a kid I had some old buckshot I wanted to get rid of, and they had some circling over me while I was in the woods so I blasted one. It sounded like someone dropped a whole sack of oysters into the trees from 300 feet in the air. It was crazy how loud it was crashing down.

It's not uncommon for Turkey Vultures to also fall out of trees in colder weather (especially if you have freezing rain). Moisture gathers on their wings then freezes, causing them to fall to the ground and not be able to fly. Watched one fall right out of my neighbor's magnolia two winters ago when we had that nasty cold snap/snow around Christmas.
It's why it's not uncommon to see them "sunning" on top of polls, radio towers, etc. to dry out their wings.

An interesting, non falling, buzzard/vulture fact: gas companies use buzzards, or at least their location, to detect pipeline leaks. One of the chemicals put into natural gas to make it smell is a chemical that exists naturally in decaying animals. The buzzards are attracted to it whether from a potential dinner source or a pipeline leak, and they congregate at the location of the leak, circling above and landing to check out the scent.

They’re just birds but that’s pretty sad seeing them all drown like that. Nature is a cruel bitcb.

Yep.
Every once in a while a bunch of shitty European Starlings just fall out of the sky dead......dozens of em, all starlings, just dead as hell. We need to figure out what kills them like that and make it happen more often.

Makes sense.
I love a good Turkey Vulture. They get a shitty rap. I think folks would appreciate them more if they realized without their absence there'd be some foul arse shite on our roadways/in our fields without their natural clean up crew work.

Outside yesterday and when i looked up and there had to be 20 of what i assume were vultures just circling high in sky.
Then about 20 more started streaming in from all directions. It was odd seeing so many
Then the entire pack kept getting higher and further away

The only fun vulture fact I know is that they will not eat a dead vulture. They'll eat almost any other dead animal but not one of their own.

I would not be putting those into my boat. Sharks gotta eat.

I wonder how much of the Gulf of America has been affected by this.

Could... could this be why buzzards might be circling... a friend's... bathroom rooftop vent?

like that old Yes song:
"Mallards fall out of the sky and they stand there..."
then another line and the keyboard solo

I wish this would happen to every double crested cormorant in existence.
We killed thousands once long time ago by dropping loads of peat gravel onto their roost with crop dusters but green jeans frowned heavily on that
