Murders are up. Crime is not. What’s going on?

quote:

Last year, the US saw the biggest increase in the murder rate in decades. The estimated total number of homicides rose to levels not seen since the late 1990s, even as the overall crime rate declined. So far, the spike has continued into 2021: Murders are up nearly 15 percent so far this year compared to the same period last year, based on data from US cities collected by crime analyst Jeff Asher.

quote:

The increase in murder appears to be a uniquely American phenomenon. While murder rates rose in some developed countries last year, like Canada and Germany, the increases are far below the double-digit spikes America is seeing. That’s especially notable because the United States already had a higher baseline of murders, after controlling for population. Despite claims that Democratic mayors or progressive criminal justice policies are driving the increase, it also appears indifferent to the political party in charge: As Asher and criminal justice expert John Pfaff have shown, murder rates increased in cities run by Democrats and Republicans, progressive and not.

Sure it has nothing to do with defunding the police or anything

Mostly peaceful murders?

Could it be that they are turning a blind eye to looking, shoplifting, and mostly peaceful rioting?

Murders can be tracked more easily than other crimes when there is no law enforcement.

Doesn’t mean crime is down.

most likely the lack of cops on the beat and the disinterest in prosecuting thugs - ergo the massive demand for ammo and guns

They still have to track murders (there's a record after all). The non-prosecution of (even severe) property crimes has probably resulted in fewer folks even reporting crimes in some places.

Also, less economic activity has probably resulted in fewer cases of shoplifting and things like that where folks congregate (bar fights, World Star videos from Wal-Mart, etc.)

Other crime is down because arrests aren’t being made and Police aren’t even taking reports in many instances.

They have to record murder.

Murders are up, crime rate is down. No shite.

You can't not count a murder. So those numbers are recorded and the rate is accurate.

"Crime rate" is simple to manipulate. Less police = less arrests, less reported crimes and ta-da! the crime rate drops. Not to mention police departments are experts at manipulating crime data. Police departments that receive federal funding have been "juking the stats" for years. It was covered extensively on The Wire and numerous tv cop shows over the years.

Works like this. Guy shoots at another guy and misses. A report is written and goes to the Crime Stats guy who has to enter the data. Attempted murder? Nah. Assault with a deadly weapon? Nah. Assault? Nah. Illegal discharge of a firearm in city limits? Isn't that a minor misdemeanor? Let's use that one.

Where have the police actually been defunded? No way it has more to do with increased poverty due to Covid/reaction to Covid. Also who in the vaunted presidential admin is going to favor defunding the police? Biden? Who basically wrote the crime bill in the 90s or prosecutor Harris that locked tons of people up for marijuana possession?

We live in an era with many George Soros backed district attorneys in many large cities. They are not prosecuting small crime. Murders, on the other hand, are still being prosecuted. Unless you live in Kimberly Gardner's district in St. Louis. Then you can actually get away with murder.

Murders can be up and crime down if you decriminalize most offenses in urban areas.

If you look at the actual tweet refernces, their chart only says "non-progressive" and "progressive". So The "non-progressive" is lumping Republican controlled cities in with democrat controlled cities they deem "democrat, non-progressive"

What a manipulated bunch of bullshite.

A rebuttal in that thread mention high murder rates in major Republican controlled cities like Sand Diego, Jacksonville, Tulsa, and Omaha.

Give me a fricking break.

New York, LA, Chicago, St Louis, Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland

New Orleans is 500 police officers short

Memphis is 500 police officers short.

Washington DC has had funding taken away and very short handed.

Where have you been hiding?

Good point.

It’s the one stat that you can’t hide, manipulate, or lie about.

Austin

quote:

The City Council voted last summer to cut $21.5 million from the police budget and shift another $128 million from the Police Department to other city departments. The effect has been a cancellation of a cadet class and the dissolution of some law enforcement units.

quote:

We found that homicides so far this year are close to doubling the number recorded this time last year. According to monthly crime stats posted by the Austin Police Department, the city has recorded 33 murders from January through the end of May. Last year the city recorded 19 murders in the same five-month span. That’s a 74% increase.
