re: Voting yes to more BR road taxes today is like giving O a contract extension.

IIRC they had a similar ballot initiave is in the early aughts and it passed.
quote:this is just a dumb generalization. in the areas where the last ballot initiative called the green light program was implemented, traffic has most definitely improved.
Yet traffic has not improved.
quote:sounds like you understand it, but ok.
You have almost every street change it's names at least once. Acadian is Stanford, College is Lee and Brightside. Siegen becomes Burbank. Coursey becomes Bluebonnet. It's confusing.

The interstate is horrible as well.
the interstate is a federal/state route, not a city route. this tax is for BR city street improvements.

And that’s AFTER millions of dollars have been spent on road improvements.
A lot of those are freeways.
I don’t think EBR should be paying for that on their own. At some point the state and feds have to step up.

So other areas of the country have lower taxes and better infrastructures. Why can’t we use that as a model rather than always just raising new taxes? Again, do more with the money you already have. Efficiency is key.

Where specifically are you talking about that pays lower taxes?

Do a search for overall tax burden. It factors in property taxes, sales tax, etc...
Louisiana is ranked #29 and TX is #34. NY is #1

About half of the country does now. TX, TN, FL, etc

All three of those places rely on higher user fees and user taxes like the gas tax, tolls, etc to pay for their transportation needs. Try any of that here and the government is stealing more money

I'm sure you're just being funny but I disagree.
Neither entity operates in anything remotely resembling a free market, but TAF has more money than they know what to do with so they don't have to make sound business decisions. TAF for the most part isn't beholden to the same level of regulations in terms of ethics and civil service.
The product produced by TAF is entertainment and promotional, where as the product BRgov is asking for is critical infrastructure.
Furthermore, BRgov actually has a pretty good track record for maintaining their finances - although I have no idea what the new mayor's personal record is.

gas tax
Not really, no

I paid $1.92 per gallon in Houston yesterday. I'm assuming folks in Louisiana are paying $1.80 as I'm being whalloped by higher gas taxes?

What's the timeline for the massive road construction to begin?
Posted on 12/9/18 at 10:09 am to Mudminnow
I believe that construction isn’t expected to start until April.

I reluctantly voted for the MoveBR tax, but only because Green Light actually worked. The majority of my reluctance is my lack of faith in SWB (I would have been less reluctant if Kip were still Mayor/President) even though there are projects in MoveBR that would impact me directly.
Posted on 12/9/18 at 10:20 am to Bard
I was disappointed with the number of green light projects that didn’t get finished, but those that did were a huge step in the right direction.

I am not shocked it passed. Many of the frustrations of people in the community is traffic. It's not because population is rapidly exploding, just that it was poorly designed and not keeping up with the times from the 80's.
Posted on 12/9/18 at 10:24 am to Mudminnow
FYI, north Baton Rouge doesn’t have hardly any traffic. The interstate system sucks due to its poor design, but the majority of the bad surface street traffic is in the suburban southern part of the parish. Back in the 80’s, most of that area was farm land and woods. Now, there’s 100k people there. Infrastructure development did not keep up with the pace of population growth and poor planning resulted in a lack of a road grid and redundancy. NBR has a grid. SBR doesn’t.

Good job on the republicans of the parish getting this tax approved. A move in the right direction for this parish.
