I got a 34, LSU was the only school out of 20 I applied to that offered me a full ride. Most schools wouldn't even give me full tuition. Tulane offered 24 k a year, would have still cost over a 100 k total, f that.

I was from out of state

I'm a bit late to the party, but the idea that you can get "merit" based aid for having a score (23) that would put you in the 25th percentile at the University of Arkansas is fricking embarrassing.

Tuition was low enough in the 70's that students could put themselves through college working part time. Enter this welfare for the middle class and tuition rises coupled with a bloated middle management layer of administrative positions that don't have jack all to do with the class room and now no one can work they way through college. Brilliant!!!

tops should strictly be academics, i don't care about economics, if you make the grades you get the funds

Two very different scenarios. You are working the job, therefore earning your income they pay you. For TOPS, they are fronting you the money with the expectation that you are going to complete something. It's an investment our sate is making trying to keep students home and hope they reinvest in Louisiana with their future.

30 seems a tad bit extreme, hell that's the level many colleges cover tuition. It's a score higher than 90% of test takers. A 25/26 seems like a better guage, as you're taking the top 25%.

They could have at least increased the GPA requirement to 3.0. Bumping the ACT to 30 is ridiculous though.

30 may be too high but you have to move it up from where it is because if it's strictly a GPA component, high schools will grade inflate even more than they do now.

My nephew made a 32 and went to LSU.

Yes a 30 is extremely high. The average decent student isn't even making a 30 on ACT.

This doesn't make sense to me. My child at LSU last semester received about $1300 in TOPS and she's in the highest category. I may be wrong, but I think it only covered about 35-40% of the tuition. (not the fees etc)

30 is extremely high. When I started LSU in fall of 2006, I was coming from Mississippi, so I was out of state. I realize how bad and expensive tuition is now compared to even then, but I made a 29 and I had a full ride even being out of state. I think I still netted 2 grand a semester in scholarship money into my bank account. Had I been in-state, and worked a little harder to get that 30, I could have likely pocketed thousands a semester to go to LSU. As someone pointed out, a person who makes a 30 on their ACT will basically have a full ride at LSU without TOPS. I think they should lower the ACT score to around a 25 or 26 and up the GPA requirements. This would stop the grade inflation in-state and at the same time help out students who are likely smart enough to spend their time and TOP's money wisely at LSU.

It's a clusterfrick now, though. The last time I looked at the out of state cost for tuition, around 2012 or 2013, it was ridiculously high compared to the years I went.

Tuition rose because the state stopped supporting higher ed. LA is on the road to making its colleges completely reliant on tuition revenues. LSU receives the lowest amount of state support in the region by a wide margin. The state would have to kick in around another $200 million per year just to get to second to last in the region. It's absolutely awful what this state has done to one of its biggest assets.

As a pre-calculus teacher at a pretty good high school just outside the BR area, I have to say that a required 2.5 or 2.75 GPA is an absolute joke. The bare minimum should be 3.0 GPA and maybe a 23-24 ACT score. If you want tiers, they should start there and go up.

Honors classes yes?

I graduated with a 4.8 GPA from West Jeff.

Would of been 5 if I didnt take ROTC. Apparently that didn't count.
