At least 20 people have been killed after a tsunami hit the coast around Indonesia's Sunda Strait, government officials say. The country's disaster management agency says 165 people were injured, and dozens of buildings were damaged. It says the possible cause of the tsunami were undersea landslides after the Krakatoa volcano erupted. The Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra connects the Java Sea to the Indian Ocean. Footage posted by the head of the disaster management agency showed the aftermath of the tsunami, with flooded streets and an overturned car.

The eruption of Krakatoa in the late 1800s was a global event.
There’s a good movie documentary about it made in 2006, “Krakatoa: The Last Days”. Awesome, terrifying stuff.

Damn. Krakatoa erupted today. The 1800s eruption was the loudest sound in recorded history.

There will be more eruptions to come. Watch out Italy.

Expect the death toll to increase. The tsunami struck a pop concert while a popular Indonesian band was playing. The bass player and band manager were killed and other members of the band, including the lead singer's wife, are still missing. I'm pretty sure many members of the concert crowd are still listed as "missing" as well.

Nothing good comes from hanging around an erupting volcano on an island. Should have been some warnings or evacs in place.

Yeah, I remember reading some time ago that it was the loudest sound ever heard by humans. People heard the actual explosion more than a thousand miles away. Imagine being awoken by a window-shaking boom in New Orleans only to see on the news there was an explosion in New York.

More like 1883.
And it was heard 4000 miles away.
