i expect them to carry his sloppy doctor arse off the plane just like they did.

What if it's a 12 hour drive? Even 8? The pilots have to have a certain amount of down time for sleep before piloting a couple hundred people to another destination 35,000 feet above the ground. I personally wouldn't like a tired pilot flying my plane...

I'll happily point out that this guy is protected by the first amendment of the constitution to say/behave however he wants if he's not endangering other people, which by all accounts he was not doing. And how that perfectly legal behavior did not justify him being assaulted while being forcibly removed from a plane against his will.

1A wouldn't apply here as he's on private property.

Then we'll get past the ridiculous legalese and into the court of public opinion, which is where this incident is currently being debated and united is coming in decidedly on the losing end. You will continue to bemoan United getting a "bad rap" for people not understanding things. At the end of all this, United will likely be paying, both literally and in customer goodwill, much more than the $1500 voucher it would've taken to get a passenger off the plane, in order to accommodate their own frickup.

I agree that UA should have gone higher on the VDB and could have handled it better.

Because as someone said earlier. Unions and lawyers.

if the guy was drunk, obnoxious, unruly and violent then the cops/security handled it 100% the right way.

if he paid for a seat and they tried to kick him off then they fricked up.

this isn't the way you handle a customer when you frick something up. keep raising the price until someone accepts.

this guy just had to get to work. what if you're wife is in labor or there is some other family emergency? picking people at random is just bad business. again this isn't the hunger games.

I was taking a piss in Baltimore one time a few summers ago, a southwest pilot walks in talking on the phone, posts up a couple urinals down from me, yawns and says into his phone "I really don't feel like flying this fricking plane right now."

I think United might find this more expensive in lost revenue and bad press than lawyers and unions.

It isn't random. They start with non-direct bookings (priceline, orbitz, etc.) and/or the cheapest fares.

you honestly think United isn't rethinking how they handled this at all and ways to handle it differently in the future?
how exactly could United have handled it better? The only thing they could do better is not have oversold flights...but that won't change.

Perhaps Chicago PD could have handed it better, but we don't see the video from when they initially arrived at the passenger's seat.

I still think the doctor is to blame because he didn't follow police orders.

they didn't even get to the amount required by law to boot a passenger ($1300).

They fricked up. They will likely pay out the nose for this, and good, United sucks.

That's the maximum. It's 400% of the fare for the IDB'd flight, up to $1300.

that the flight was overbooked and United, offering $400 and a hotel stay, was looking for one volunteer to take another flight to Louisville at 3 p.m. Monday.

Increase it to $1000 and get a volunteer instead of booting someone forcibly and making a scene.

I've never volunteered for less than $800.

No passenger should have his seat bumped because an airline can't work out the logistics of getting their crew to work on time.

I agree with that.

Maybe it should?

If United wanted to make it right with passengers this would be the ticket.

Like you said it won't, so they'll instead take it on the chin with the public.

Delta and American would have done the same thing.

Delta gave me $800 to wait 90 minutes and fly through Minneapolis instead of Atlanta before a holiday weekend.

I've seen them get up to $1200.

Why didn't United try increasing the offer to $1000 or so? The overbooking was their mistake.

Jesus. Why not ask for volunteers? Someone always raises their hand.

I guess they'd rather boot someone by force than offer a reasonable compensation for volunteers?

This is where I'm perplexed. Stopping at $800 was very short-sighted.
