It's a video game that was recently turned into a really good HBO show. The game is by the same people who did the Uncharted series.
I first remember learning about this kind of fungus from a season 2 episode of the X-Files. LINK Pretty good guest star cast in that one w/Bradley Whitford, Hiro Kanagawa, Leland Orser, and Shawnee Smith.
