LINK

Announced yesterday and even Cameron parish officials weren’t aware.
I’m working down here now and hope this happens so I can retire here.

Data Centers in the direct path of a hurricane.

Bold move, Cotton.

I was thinking the same thing. Electronics and storm surge don't mix

I read somewhere that with interest rates still high, a lot of these new data centers are being financed with some pretty risky debt, including junk bonds. If the demand for AI doesn’t materialize the way they’re hoping, all that borrowing could come back to bite them. Could have some real echoes of 2008.

we've heard similar rumblings. Apparently there are concerns that technology is outpacing construction and the data centers are facing redesigns/upgrades before completion. This in turn has financial backers starting to question the risk. We've seen no slow down in construction material demand, but we are seeing an increase in people asking "what if" and WTF?

This isnt the same bubble 08 was. The major players doing the heavy lifting on AI data centers, your googles and Microsoft’s of the world, they can manage the debt as they are hugely profitable. There are smaller companies that would get hit if the cash doesn’t come. You’d get a dot com level hit than an 08 hit. Impactful sure, but not Great Recession level.

No one can manage unlimited debt. Google and Microsoft have limits just like anyone else. There limits and tolerances may be a lot more than normal, but I guarantee you they have a breaking point. If (and thats a big IF) the ROI doesn't justify the expense, they'll pump the brakes like anyone esle.

Its almost like a billion dollar company wouldn't have thought about this before announcing it or anything? I bet they didn't think about this risk that someone else on a LSU football fan forum did...

I can assure you they will eliminate this risk entirely if they plan on investing billions money into data centers.

They will mitigate risks with infrastructure and insurance.

It is either that or put all your data in the cloud where who know who has access to it.

I some of these new data centers are geared for companies to keep their data on their premises and not allow other AI companies to have access to it.

I attended a meeting in Terrebonne as there is some discussion of putting some centers there too.

There is a new term that will become a catch all for these places that may not be a total data center, but more like a digital factory which is a term they threw out last night.

I guess a digital factory is a better way to say data center so the companies can use incentives that governments would use to attract manufacturing factories.

I don’t understand why these billion dollar investments don’t care about imminent sea level rise

There's going to be a data center bubble. It's inevitable.

It's going to be pretty bad. A large percentage of all stock market growth is speculation on the AI boom which is already showing signs of slowing down.

Once they get that taxpayer money check they don’t care if the data center gets blowed away

They are essentially a box… easily fortified .. they are positioned close to major high voltage lines and substations that will allow power restoration quicker.. flooding is the only real concern and they won’t put them in low spots…
