If you’re planning on moving to the Portland metro as a laborer, that room at your friends place better be really cheap or free. There would be a lot more opportunity for you on the other side of the state (in OR or WA) but then you’d be 3 hours from your friends in a place that isn’t nearly as “cool.” But you’d have an easier time finding decent paying employment and the money you do make would go a lot further.
But hey, you’re at a point now that moving to Portland and not having it work out in 3,6,9 months, basically just puts you in the same place you are now. It’s pretty risk free if you ask me. Go for it.

in huntsville, alabama toyota/mazda is hiring about 3500 people at their new manufacturing facility. Many of the jobs are going to be manufacturing line and they will train. your past experience can't hurt. I'd probably rather live there than portland.

I just finished getting caught up reading the replies posted after my last post. I appreciate everyone who has responded. I received some good, much needed advice. I got a couple laughs, which I needed as well. I've got some thinking to do.

I don't play much anymore. I used to play drums. Black metal is my favorite genre. My friend used to operate a black metal label based in Portland. The music scene is another reason why I'd like to spend some time up there.

Portland, OR is full of wayward millennials with no skills. It would be tough to make a fresh start for you there. Portland, TN would probably be better.

Ok breaking down your post practically:
You can get work as a mason and get paid decently if you are efficient. Im hiring subcontractors all the damn time and they dont work for cheap, especially if they have good reputations. Whereever you move, call some contractors.
As for moving, yes you should do it. Go where there is more opportunity. Amazon is almost always hiring for their warehouse jobs. I moved to Denver several years back and had no job, no place to stay. I got on with Amazon making $14/hr doing work a well trained monkey could do. I did that until I found better work.
First thing you need to do once you get where you are going is have a resume made up and go see an employment agency. Literally first day you are there. They will get you temp work and some pay coming in. Start taking weekend/off day jobs doing masonry and/or mechanic work. Youll be on your feet rolling in no time. There is no need to despair. If you can work with your hands, you can find work that pays decently.
