There was a discussion about this several weeks or a month ago. I linked a bunch of articles arguing my point.

I can tell he cheated for that 4.0, just by looking at him. His smug tone just confirmed it.

Also a poor indicator of intelligence.

It's only a poor indicator for those on the OT who either they themselves or their kids scored poorly yet still had a 3.0 in high school.

Junior is just so smart and has made all As and Bs, but he just isn't a good test taker and scored a 19 on the ACT.

Tosh on being a "bad test-taker"

I'm not sure where these people exist where standardized tests don't measure intelligence. They may not measure success, but they sure as shite do a great job of measuring intelligence and reasoning ability

I mean it isn't an IQ test if that is what they're inferring, but it damn sure measures your ability to recall the information you should know before you enter an American college.

We can argue about whether the information tested is relevant or not, but as it stands, they do a pretty damn good job. I'll say the same thing I said last time this topic came up - I've never met a single intelligent person in my life who didn't score well on a standardized test.

If it's school policy, I don't have problem with it.

I would prefer for folks to continue to associate heavy Southern accents with subpar intellect. The satisfaction from embarassing those who assume I'm a mental midget based off of my accent is too damn good to let go.

There's a guy that calls into the Opie Radio show on SiriusXM that has an ultra heavy drawl - he always gets people calling in to call him an idiot and he throws shite right back at him. It's glorious, and I don't even have the southern accent. Last time he called in he was at the Golden State/OKC playoff game in his RV. people called in to insult him and he threw their shite right back at them - "How am I the ignorant mother fricker when I'm sitting in my RV, I own multiple businesses, just left the Kentucky Derby, etc"

Its a really poor indicator because it doesnt test someones ability to learn. Not all curriclums are created equal. If the school hasnt taught someone something then the school hasnt taught it. Until you sit in an extremely shitty black classroom you cant really comment on the situation.

This isnt like taking the bar or FE exam where you are expected to know certain universal topics that are taught at every school.

Dialect and accent are not an indication of IQ

I didn't watch the video, but reading the article doesn't bode well for our valedictorian Mr. Jones:

quote:

"They were just straight… you either got to shave or you ain't going to graduate," Jones said.

quote:

"It's all about your high school graduation, you're graduating from all the hard work and it got took away from me like that," Jones said.

quote:

"I don't want no part with them," Jones said.

I suppose he don't want no part of the English language either.

What if the reading/comp section was given in the native tongue?

Then it wouldn't be the same test, and it would not be able to be compared to the English test.

As a more overarching point, it is impossible to give any kind of "intelligence test" that doesn't have some kind of bias. It comes down to definitions of intelligence and different talents and types of intelligence.

No matter what a test will be restricted to testing a very limited definition of whatever intelligence may mean to the creator of the test or even what may be measurable. An intelligence test will be very good at identifying extremes at both enda, whether a person is severely deficient in basic areas or unusually proficient in certain skill sets. Differentiating some average set of people's general intelligence is much more difficult and maybe impossible imo.

Sorry for the tangent, but I think the subject of defining intelligence and how it manifests itself is very interesting.

that's exactly the joke about his 4.0

which is why i joked back with the ACT comment

for the record, i scored a 20 in 7th grade

most of the elite kids in my class were in that range

it's not ALL curriculum. that comes into play when you get into the mid 20s, though, and is very important into the 30s chasin that 36
