bruh

depending on the arena we're discussing, smart/lazy > mediocre/hard-working

one has a much lower ceiling and is likely maxing out at a lower-level high school plateau

you're going to find a much higher number of successful people who are intelligent as frick but are lazy (or were for periods)

Also, none of this is relevant post highschool.

very wrong, especially in the skills economy where adaptability will be crucial

I'm not discounting GPA, but the reason we have the ACT AND SAT is because GPA is not a consistent variable from place to place (like big fish small pond) which diminishes it's predictive potential.

Verbal/Quant score?

Regardless, was that an improvement, percentile wise, over your ACT score?

Neither am I. My point is that there are such things as regional diction. It can eventually lead to new languages.

Yes, I think that everyone needs to be able to write and speak Standard American English, but I understand that not everyone will regularly talk that way.

Furthermore, I find it laughable that people on here make fun of the way black people talk when most posters on this board in Acadiana probably don't exactly speak perfect English either.

when a guy like Leonard Fournette speaks, what do you think about him?

he's from new orleans and is trying to mold a PR-based image

he's typically very protective of what he says b/c of the PR machine so it's not easy to really judge

he doesn't seem dumb by any means but i'd guess he's average intelligence

They were pretty close, so divide that number in half. Verbal was maybe two points higher.

I honestly couldn't tell you considering I took my ACT in 2001/2002.

However, I do remember being in the 99th percentile in science and math on some standardized tests I took in sixth grade. For whatever that is worth.

Well obviously, but that wasn't the question. The question was which one do you trust more? You say a high GPA, but given the choice between the two, that is unwise.

But it doesn't tell a damn thing about wether or not they're capable of learning anything over that basic level.

And an emphasis on speed and memory is the basis of many intelligence tests. It isn't completely useless. It may and probably does contribute to higher order thinking in many cases, but it also leaves out many skills and abilities.

If person A can calculate a long division problem in a split second, and person B is slower but can put together an incredibly complicated puzzle over the course of weeks that person A would never complete then who is really more intelligent?

I think there are a myriad of different abilities that could be tied to intelligence that iq or general intelligence tests won't necessarily take into account.

That isn't a bad GRE score. Obviously not elite, but not bad. I still find it interesting that you've got a master's degree and are working on your doctorate in a STEM field yet your scores aren't significantly above average.

(I really don't know how to word that without sounding like a douchebag, so hopefully you understand my point regardless)

Well chances are that person B would solve various puzzles better than Person A on a subtest takes less than 15 minutes so that ability would be captured in an intelligence test without needing to solve a weeks long puzzle.

The Theory of Multiple Intelligences.

Some people can't solve a math problem or write a sentence to save their life. Yet, they can play any tune on the radio by ear. Other people are horrid students but are masters of persuasion and manipulation. We all have different skills, and current IQ tests only judge the abilities of a small set of them.

Well sure, but almost every intelligence test being discussed is specific to the field you're going to study or work.

I'm sure I wouldn't do well if you dropped the MCAT in my lap, but give me a GMAT and let's roll.

And a relatively lower ACT doesn't tell you that he isn't capable of learning above a certain level. It means that he hasn't been taught the material.
