I would bet it is still another few weeks before this gets resolved. I will guess March 15th.

Y tu Brute? This is why contractors get vacation days. Not to spend time with your family but to wait out bullshite.

Talks may not resume until the 2nd week in March. Supposedly once Shell found out that PA, Convent & Norco were now included, they halted talks.

n a letter to employees, Shell said the major sticking point in the talks was the USW's push to shift daily maintenance work from non-union contractors to union members.

The company said it offered a 6.5 percent increase in pay to the USW over the three years of the agreement.

It just blows my mind that neither party is in a hurry to resolve this as quick as possible. Meanwhile, all of us that are affected, are either locked inside the razor wire or picketing on the outside. Ridiculous....

Yeah they've already agreed upon the 6.5%. 2, 2.5, 2% for the next 3 years. That ain't shite for a cost of living raise. 3% is the norm.

Laugh all you want. I've worked in P&T, Norco, Deer Park, and now Pipelines. The training and qualifications are being taken seriously.

There isn't enough people qualified and it's one of the main reasons contractors are slowly being brought back versus business as usual.

That sounds good and everything, but if there not willing to budge on contract labor I don't think we'll be returning anytime soon. It's not negotiating if you just cut someone's leg off every time u don't get your way.

I'm sure a battle with cancer already dips into whatever savings you have with normal insurance and like I said, I'd cross that line first chance I got and wouldn't think twice.

My wife/kid's life is more important to me than whether or not the plant hires 10 electricians or contracts out 15 of them.

No doubt, you are talking about an extremely small number of people in this situation.

I hear you. The company said they would talk about more shop jobs the last 2 contracts. They did talk about it 1 meeting per contract and that was it and they never wanted to meet again. This is why this is a sticking point. We have some skilled contractors that we could bring on board for these jobs.

True. My raises over the past 12 years with Shell have been at or over 3% each year. That 2% offer was low balling.

Please excuse the naïveté of my question, but why shouldn't plant owners be able to hire whatever mix of union/non Union they desire at whatever time they desire?

They can. There is no rule requiring anyone to be in the union.

The employees are the ones who want the union, not the company.

The union could be stronger, but goverments and policies have really fricked up union power in the the last few decades. A union member should never have to go to HR with the company they work for. All issues should be handled in house, but there is no way that can happen in today's world.
