Yes, they have given this up for several decades and now want to reverse course. With refineries raking in profits due to low oil prices they figured this was their chance.
They might be overplaying their hand.

There are some staffing issues, I'll agree with the union in that regard, but the courts have already ruled that the union cannot dictate who/what the company hires.
A company can choose to hire 30 contractors if they wish to phase out a job, and there's nothing the union can do about it. There was a case at Norco that went to arbitration and the union lost regarding this very issue.

No doubt. Unless there is written language in a contract. Hence what this fight is about.
The union is basing it as a safety argument because the common response from the company is that they would hire more employee's if they could find qualified help. Obviously there is qualified help, but they just choose not to hire them.
It is the companies right to do as they see fit, but you are watching two shady organizations try and out frick each other.

Okay , now we might be getting somewhere, it is not about safety, or fatigue, or even health insurance, it is about the union getting new blood, pathetic, I hope the rest of the plants on strike follow Deer Park and cross the line and tell the union to shove it

Well, I guess it is how you look at it. The guys applying for company positions are being told they are not qualified.
So they go back and do the exact same job as a contractor.
The company says they aren't qualified, but they let them work on the equipment anyway?

Smartest thing anyone's said in this entire thread.

Many of the jobs given to contractors are beneath USW members. It's not that they can't do it; its that they don't want to.

??? The reason contractors are on site is because Shell can keep official headcount down (not to mention the money they save by not having to provide benefits) but most importantly contractors are easily disposable when it's time to make budget, etc. It makes sense for the company to contract maintenance out. They can thin or thicken the staff at will. If the weather is too cold or wet, they can send everyone home without pay. More to do with overall cost savings.

I see it every day. Maintenance won't answer their phone, so contractors are called out. If they do come it's not until late so that they can get a call out and not come in the next and still get paid.

Why not strike at 100% of the plants they have infested?
Posted on 2/22/15 at 10:11 pm to Tigerpaw123
No idea how anyone can defend unions.

Sarsippius is 100% correct.

Bc then the nonunion plants make out like bandits and that's not what the union wants.
I think there is also some law where the govt can step in and tell you to work to avoid some type of economic crisis. I think that happened with the dock workers in Cali.

I don't see this strike ending well for the unions. I have seen very little support here from the strikers. My facebook seems to show quite a bit of support, but those showing support aren't currently on strike.

I know I'd be pissed if I was at the Shell plant that had everything the USW was asking for and they made us strike anyway

I just saw about 20 of them on River Rd at Shell Norco. Doesn't seem like a very big turn out.

Yea I went. It was BS. They do offer insurance(emergencies only) but with my being pregnant she is covered 100%. I would advise to go to the hall and fill out the form. If you don't fill it out then you don't get the insurance. Our insurance runs out at the end of the month so if you need anything health I would go to the doc this week.
As far as the contractor issue, some one hit it perfect. We I'm on nights or weekends we see more contractors for maintenance) then we see Shell/Motiva. The maintenance dept has did this to themselves bc they don't or won't answer there phones unless it benefits them into being off the next day with pay! So the company calls out contractors to do their job and they don't lime it bc they think contractors are taking their job from them but really our maintenance dept is running themselves out of a job.
