I’ve quit drinking, smoking cigarettes, weed, and Zyn’s using cough drops. Any time you even think you’re getting a craving just pop one in as a substitute. They have to be strong though, I buy Vick’s Vapo-Cools in bulk on Amazon, they’re the strongest cough drop you can get.

A normal Hall’s has about 5mg of menthol, the Vapo-Cools have 25mg! They are very strong and they work. I used to pop a Zyn any time I had to drive somewhere, now I pop a cough drop and get a handful for my pocket. It really works if you train your brain to accept the cough drop in lieu of whatever else you were craving.

Hope this helps anyone struggling with this stuff, it’s worked for me for about 6 months now.

OT response: haha oral fixation

Actual response: this is pretty neat and thank you for sharing. I may have to tell friends trying to quit about this technique.

Odd thread. A little weed is healthier than stuffing your mouth with medicated cough drops all day

I was there for a while, probably had about 15 per day. Now I’m down to about 5 and it’s much easier to taper down because they’re not as addictive as something like nicotine.

It’s just to break the addiction and taper down. If you normally take 10 tokes a day you could do 5 tokes and 5 cough drops instead. I got down to zero tokes and I just take a gummy most nights.

I’m nearing the point of wanting to completely kick my dipping habit, and this is a source of many good jokes. the nicotine isn’t even the addictive part anymore, it’s the literal oral fixation I can’t kick

The best fix/diet is the one we believe in. What was it that made you try and believe in this?

Are you saying it's the menthol or what? Seems like you'd want a replacement at least more enjoyable tasting than the item you're replacing.

Now I smoke menthols with a cough drop.

Keep it up! Well done.

Hope a clear head, lesser dips in the day and general productivity in your life and relationships reinforce that great change you have made.

Menthol binds to the same receptor in your brain as nicotine, although not as strongly. It also binds to all kinds of other receptors too such as kappa opioid receptors and the ones that detect cold sensations. It’s really an interesting compound.

I was sick last summer and couldn’t drink or smoke, so I was popping a cough drop every time I got a craving. Once I healed up I kept doing those instead of alcohol or nicotine and I’ve just stuck with it.

I quit cold turkey in 2020. I remember wanting to rip the gums out of my mouth for the first month or so for this exact reason. It was tough but it was well worth it.

Good stuff. Genuinely happy for you. I used to hit geebs from sun up to sun down. Nowadays I only take one at night to wind down and play video games. I broke my habit by getting tired of spending so much on weed. An eighth will last me two weeks to a month now, compared to where I used to be, around an oz/month

gummys are awesome but living in an illegal state makes it difficult to partake. i take edibles only when a close buddy of mine whips up a batch of brownies that I know are safe
