I asked OP what years and engine platform he was considering with no reply. Absolutely no way to quantify mileage concerns without knowing these parameters.

IMO the 4th gen 06-09 V8 would be the starting point for a late model search since Toyota fixed the earlier model frame rust issues and increased available horsepower in the later engines. Probably the most desirable would be the 09 Trail Edition which featured an electronic rear locking differential in addition to the center diff lock available in the other earlier 4th gen models.

Holy grail model 4R to me is a 85 solid axle 1st gen with the 22 RE engine but they are spartan interior wise and not as comfortable for daily driving as late models. But man do they just go where you point them and so damn easy to work on. Not many mileage worries on these as they are so cheap to maintain and repair although parts can sometimes be harder to locate.

A capable compromise and highly sought after 4R would be a 3rd gen. They were the first to be built on the LC Prado frame platform and could be found with the 5VZ FE V6. I'd look for a 99 Highlander Sport Edition or a 00 Limited with the rear e-locker. These later models had interior and lighting upgrades and provided a great mating of old school 4x4 with improved drivability and creature comforts. These engines can easily be reliable into the 300k's with routine maintenance and overall are tough, rugged and simple. They will be harder to find with low mileage than newer generations but I wouldn't let that scare me off should you find one that hasn't been beat on or lived in the rust belt or northern latitudes.

Toyota don’t waste your money on used go buy a new SR5 base model for 41k prob have to fly & drive or have it delivered be done with it. Red black white or gray.

I appreciate the info. I was thinking about a recent year 2017-present). I had no idea about all of the older generation stuff and engine types and what not. I was budgeting about 30k. Now I’ve got more to think about

First, I would get a mechanic to give it a check up for me. Low mileage is not always a good indicator. With a clean bill of health I would take 40,000 miles tops.

That’s.a different topic, but older Lexus GX’s (Toyota Prado LC’s) like this one are the best preowned value for someone that wants to build a nice off-road rig. Most were never driven off the pavement, they’re bulletproof like the 4Runner, but with a dependable v8. Crappy gas mileage is the only downsideb but worth it.

I’d try to find something around 100,000 miles that has had the maintenance done and belts changed. That’s prob your best bargain.

There’s still a lot of people that get rid of vehicles with 100k miles and Toyotas will run for an easy 200-300k.

The 5th Gen has been in production since 2010 and received a facelift in 2014, in 2020 they added the collision avoidance sensors on the front and upgraded the headunit to have Apple Carplay, other than that they've been practically unchanged since 2010. They're rock solid, plenty of 5th Gens running around with over 200,000 miles with no real issues outside of normal maintenance.

What are you looking for? 4x4 or no? Having 4x4 keeps your resale value high. If you're wanting a 3rd row(which aren't that great) you'll have to find either a SR5 or Limited package, 3rd row was unavailable for TRD Off Roads and TRD Pro packages.

When they don't have frame rust issues, bad engines or other lesser problems that plagued successive generations of the model. I wouldn't go beyond the 3rd gen model and even then the 3.0 V6 had issues that are inherent to its design. We had a 1997 SR5 that went through two engines in about 60k miles each.

I have a 2006 Sport Edition V8 2WD that I bought new and only just hit 140K. Just did timing belt and water pump a year ago (rolled dice and was pretty overdue). Had an alternator go out about 5 years ago, but other than that no issues the usual maintenance.

I want to buy something new, but I know statically I'll never own a more reliable vehicle.

Try to find a 10 year old 4Runner with around 100K on it.

They’re in the $13-15k range.

Get one, and you can easily drive it for another 10 years if you put 13-15k miles a year.

2UZ's service maintenance mileage recommendations are notoriously low and overblown. It's good to follow the 90k interval but I've seen timing belts with more than double that and no concerning wear. Best to change the tensioners and water pump/thermostat with an Aisin unit while going in there along with the serpentine belt. I also change the fan bracket in the front every other t-belt change because that is usually about when the bearings give up and eats up the belt.

Yep. You're most likely correct about that. Toyota has some other engines worldwide with excellent longevity attributes but stateside I'd wager that their 4.7L powerplant is the standard. They'll easily get to a half million miles with regular maintenance and a little care.

Another point of concern is coolant and hoses. Overheating can be the death knoll of these engines. Failed heater tees or hoses and an inattentive driver can cause carnage as poster burgeman can likely attest to although his LC's past overheated condition caused no lasting effects and demonstrates just how robust and reliable these engines are.

Absolutely correct. I could not recommend buying any vehicle with a 3VZ E engine unless you enjoy changing head gaskets.

got a '03 Sr5 here with 168K, leather but busted. Some hail dents. BUT it has the million-mile transmission. Always serviced. All AIR works hot and cold, even the wipers work (not the back)

Oldest used it in HS.

my current situation is deciding between an old/relatively high mileage gx or a low mileage f150/Silverado/ram. tough decision for me

Truth. Hence the reason I have 2 LX's instead of LC's. On top of that the Lexus models are usually easier to find as Toyota owners generally keep their vehicles longer and Lexus owners trade in more often in my experience. Usually these same Lexus owners bring their vehicles into the dealership for routine servicing and even mundane things like batteries and wipers so they usually have a better service record than Toyota owners who might have some of the service work outsourced or do it themselves.

From a panel discussion on an auto radio show, Toyotas are good for between 250 and 300k miles.

I guess a lot would depend on the car itself, how it was treated, accidents, floods and rough driving would all matter.
