Found a vehicle I’m interested in. It’s at a dealership, and car gurus shows it’s overpriced by about $4K.

I go see the car, looks good and ask them to put the numbers on paper to see the out the door price.

The kicker is the manager (owner) of the dealership won’t budge on the price. Zero. They’ve had the vehicle for about a month. I’m pretty surprised. Thought they overpriced it to have some negotiating room.

Is anyone else seeing this at dealerships for used cars?

Yes. They don't come off prices like they used to. Supply and demand. If you don't pay $4K over some other sucker will.

What I’m guessing happened is they paid out the arse for it at wholesale and can’t lower the price without taking an L on it. Wholesale prices are finally trending down.

Walk away and let the guy sit on it. His loss.

As long as people are willing to finance them for over the sticker price, it will continue.

People I know in the used business have been telling me the competition for used vehicles has skyrocketed the prices they pay at auction. Even wrecked Copart cars are insanely priced right now.

Thanks for a legitimate answer.

I thought the Car Gurus Fair Price already was factoring in the ridiculous overpricing of used cars. Like the bar had been reset and this $4K is over and above that crazy pricing. I guess my perception of the current situation is wrong.

They know it will sell. What CarGurus says has no bearing on what they believe they can get for the car. I had the misfortune of working for an owner of several car dealerships and spent time in them.

I once heard a customer arguing what KBB said his trade-in was worth. The manager's retort was "That's fine, call them and see if they will buy it from you for that amount"

Both of my vehicles are paid off and I hope to keep them for years until this current clusterfrick levels out. One of my fears is that some jackass hits me and totals it. Then, even if by some lucky chance they actually have insurance in this fine state, I'll be forced to buy some overpriced shite.

Rookie move. Tell them what you need to pay each month and make them figure out how to make that happen. Work smarter not harder.

As are mine. Both are in great shape body-wise, so when the time comes I'll just drop a new engine in it and keep going.

Louisiana dealers don't negotiate. I buy similar vehicle in Texas and save thousands of dollars.

I guess the take it or leave it model works for the La dealers.

Edit: I learned this in 2011; Suburban with around 125k miles- In New Orleans area $12k; I would have paid 10k. Found similar vehicle in Texas and got it for $8k.

I have bought 4 other vehicles for wife and kids since then and basically same results. Test drive in New Orleans area and buy similar vehicle in Texas after a quick test drive. Always from a dealership and never any issues.

I hope this is a joke because it’s exactly what you do not do.

If you tell them how much you’re willing to pay guarantee, will pay that much and some

Slim chance of that happening, but you’re right to drive the old ones until the wheels fall off.

The dealership said you should never pay attention to website pricing unless it’s in their favor.

He wasn’t wrong. The market sets the market, not the book/website.

If you don't like the price, don't buy it
