The U.S. will soon break the record for the number of confirmed measles cases this year after health officials found dozens of new measles cases in the last week.

As of April 19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified 626 cases of measles in 22 states across the country, an increase of 71 cases and two additional states in the past week.

quote:

This is the greatest number of cases reported in the U.S. in the last five years, and the second highest number since measles was eliminated in 2000. The worst year for measles since then was 2014, when there were 667 cases.
In the coming weeks, 2019 confirmed case numbers will likely surpass 2014 levels, the CDC said.

quote:

New York City is home to the largest measles outbreak in the country, and cases primarily centered among Orthodox Jews living in certain neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. As of Thursday, there have been 359 confirmed cases of measles in those areas.

The anti-vaccine movement has been spreading disinformation about vaccines among vulnerable populations like New York’s Orthodox community, which has led to high rates of vaccine refusal and overall hesitancy.

Not good for my son, who’s not old enough to get the measles vaccination yet.

i don't think our problem is the anti-vacc Facebook moms. our problem is our undocumented friends coming over illegally.

you can thank the Democratics for wanting open borders for that.

How many of our undocumented friends are Orthodox Jews?

That is almost as stupid a line of reasoning as the anti vaxxers use. Almost.

That’s a stupid statement. It wasn’t that long ago, before measles vaccines were discovered, that there were millions of U.S. measles cases every year.

That headline highlights part of the overall issue that got us here. A news outlet posts a headline "US will soon break record for measles cases in a year" when, in fact, the US will break the record for this century. Sensationalistic headlines and pseudoscience reporting help create the current environment in which the anti vaxxer mumbo jumbo and other snake oil treatments thrive.

Here are the facts, as recently as 1994 the US had 963 reported cases of measles. In 1920, the United States had 469,924 recorded cases of measles and 7,575 deaths associated with measles. From 1958 to 1962, the U.S. averaged 503,282 cases and 432 death associated with measles each year.

Not millions but hundreds of thousands.

It’s a mixture of both but it’s mostly stupid fricking women who care more about showing how woke they are with their unscientific articles than they do about the health and well-being of their own children and of the children at large.

This is why, for the most part, we should stop giving women power in this country. They’re too easily swayed by emotional tales and simply refuse to think logically.

The anti vaxxers were the well tilled fertile soil for the undocumented carriers to plant their seeds of destruction.

Man, that sounded way more sexual than I wanted it to.

I guess you stopped reading before the part "Since measles were effectively eliminated in the year 2000"

In that case, yes, it will be a record breaking year because no kid should be getting it

And also, I have no problem with the media sensationalizing this because it is fricking stupid these parents won't protect their kids and the children who are too young or medically unfit to receive the vaccine. And if the parents are too dumb to be swayed by unfounded and unsupported Facebook posts, maybe they'll be corrected by something that at least can be backed up by science after to get through the "sensationalized" headline
