This is a big factor. It is essentially the "pride" factor that people put a lot of stock into.

Divorces, kids who lose their way and become criminals, getting laid off of a good job and have a tough time finding another, etc. Drug habit they can't kick perhaps.

I think we are seeing the fallout from all the chemical laced shite we eat
Unless you are talking about an indirect relationship of eating processed foods leading to poor health (e.g., obesity) which leads to poor mental health which leads to suicide, then this seems like a bunch of BS.

You mean like antidepressants which actually decrease suicide rates?

Do black women play a role in this, or is it just black men.

We get lots of children (ages 10 up to teenagers)that either attempted or verbalized suicidal feelings. Because they may not have insurance, and because AZ has very limited child psych beds available....these kids basically hang out with us until a bed comes available. Many times....the doctors end up just discharging them home after they have stayed with us for 2-3 weeks and it's obvious that a bed will never open up to them(esp if they don't have any insurance). So NOTHING was done for these kids basically.

None of us peds nurses are trained as psych nurses, these kids aren't able to talk to counselors and group sessions, etc while they are waiting for psych treatment. The ones I have cared for....either it was seriously messed up home situations(abuse or parents doing drugs, whatever) OR...they were being bullied by others in school and online. It is just heartbreaking to see some of these kids. You just want to hug them and tell them that things do get better, if they could just wait it out and see.

71.9% reported being cyberbullied once or twice in the school year

depending on how they define "cyberbullied" that may not really be significant

Many people who kill themselves are so mentally ill that they think they're doing their loved ones a favor by committing suicide. Sick, misguided... there's a lot of words you can call them but I don't think cowardly is one of them.

I was looking more at the other numbers. 3% saying they get it everyday, that's got to be hard to take as a kid.

There was a thread on here several years back in which many posters opened up about having suicidal thoughts or actions. Try to be considerate to those people will you.

I never called them brave. But to say they're weak is misguided. There would have to be a lot of pain and suffering to take your own life. I won't sit in judgement, especially when people effectively commit slow suicide by lifestyle choices on a daily basis.

What ridiculousness. No reasonable person is advocating for glorification at the same time shaming them when there are likely severe neurobiological issues occuring is counterproductive as well.

Causes, anyone?

A lot of people are becoming disenfranchised due to:
Low employment opportunities
Student loans
Government that caters to the ultra-wealthy and doesn't seem to represent constituents
General lack of regard for human life from our officials (police shootings, lead in water, fracking, no telling what's in our food)
Our health care system is in shambles
Our mental health care system is the joke of the free world

64.5% said it was once or twice in the school year
18.5% said once or twice a month
9.2% said once or twice a week
7.8% said almost every day

yup. i don't think "cyber" has as much to do with it as other things

hell this may be a macro-social way of culling the herd b/c we are over-populated and people just aren't creating enough serotonin

Older whites cannot cope well with no longer being the dominant, privileged race.

We had quite a discussion in one of my sociology classes about this issue.

So, I'm not surprised to see the suicide rate increasing.
