I'll go ahead and say it. It's amazing. If the numbers were reversed between Black and White suicide rates, people would be screaming all over the place. Instead, it's a footnote. The white male suicide rates are staggering.
I disagree, since if they really cared about black people's mental health, then they would have long stepped in. All they care about is headlines and that their historical subjugators are involved. If it's a black kid killing another, they don't give a frick. It's all about some outside force they can't control ruining them instead of calling them out on their own bullshite.

I was closely connected to 4 suicides in 2015. All were very different and none of the people knew each other.
1.) One guy had a major drinking issue. Seemed to be generally down on his luck financially and lonely. Grew up here, moved to California 10 years, and had came back a month prior to meeting me. Current housemates wanted him out and was trying to push him off on anyone. Wanted to rent from me but after an interview with him I declined. Partly because he was drunk and seemed desperate. A month later he was dead.
2.) Attractive military reserve girl, mid 30's with good career in medical biology. Recent divorcee. Judgement for part of her ex's military pension was decided against her a couple days prior. Not sure what else had happened but sister had hung herself in high school. Mother claimed she was overwhelmed and mentally couldn't digest things anymore. Mother didn't seem surprised.
3.) Overdose of a person I had rented a room in my home too a month prior. Saturday night, a month in a new state with a new job. Very nice guy in mid 30's but very shy , quiet, and lonely. Extreme anxiety issues, but good job and wealthy family. Likely had a hard time fitting in, in a new state, city. Family wasn't surprised.
4.) 21 year old German guy with a brother he was close to a year older. Cute fiance and daughter. This was extremely unexpected by his friends and co-workers. The only thing I could figure out was he had tendency to get down on himself too hard. He & his brother were shade tree mechanics for a popular used car dealer. That's the only one of the 4 that seemed to be totally unexpected by either family or friends. Just left long message on facebook about the world not being a good enough place to live in, death being better, and he decided to click post and do the deed.
I think the reasons are the same as they were several years ago. The spike has to do with increased mental health issues, substance abuse, relationship issues, and financial issues. Internet has played a role.

My best friends 26 year old son took his own life three weeks ago. Saw him for the first time yesterday and I was shocked by the things he told me. But evidently the whole thing was over a breakup with his girlfriend and he videotaped his suicide.

Parents splitting up, kids on pills, the media.

There's finally a lot of interest on the subject. Suicide in the US is higher among certain groups especially (such as native americans and whites - especially men more than women).
In the United States at least - the rate of suicide attempts is actually reported to be higher in women than men but the rate of success (in part because of factors like simultaneous use of alcohol, and different methods such as guns and rope in men versus things like pills in women which are more frequently reversible).
There are good data about suicide rates in a lot of the world: notable problems in Russia, South Korea, Lithuania, Hungary, Latvia, Japan, etc which exceed that of the United States.
