The price of beef is obscene, so our current trajectory needs a shake-up. I'm unsure if these imports will help achieve that goal. This probably has more to do with throwing Argentina a lifeline as South America goes through yet another wave of socialism.

I have two friends who have small herds. They are getting a really good price right now for calves and young cows. That said, the price of hay is high, there hasn't been much rain. Fertiler is expensive and equipment is out of sight.

Perhaps a bigger concern is the size of the national herd. It's diminished and with folks selling off mama cows and calves, rebuilding the size of the herd is not something that will happen overnight. They expect grocery store prices to continue to go up.

The guy I buy freezer beef told me he wasn't doing that anymore. He is making more money off selling the cows directly. Last side of beef I got, was not very good quality. I overpaid for low quality beef.

That's too bad. I haven't had that problem, but then one of those guys is my BiL and that's who I get beef from and have for the past 20 years. Quality has not been a problem at all plus, I know exactly what goes in those animals.

Mates these Argentinian steaks from our good friends at Trader Joes are delicious, affordable, and a key staple of my "superfoods only" ketogenic diet

Knowing factually that inflation is up and employment is down since April 2025 when Trump announced his idiotic tariffs isnt "TDS."

The US exports 12 percent of its beef production. The US imports about 15% of beef used in the US. The majority of that is scraps and trimmings used for ground meat and non-human consumption.

I think the cattle industry will be fine.

Because of govt policies and regulations that ran a bunch of ranchers out of business and caused pastures to be taken out to put corn/soybeans

Isn't this the exact opposite goal of his tarrif strategy? What exactly is the strategy here by the government?

Our current tariff strategy is fluid, targeted, and much more nuanced than blanket tariffs. They are used as a catalyst for bilateral trade deals that are meant to supplement American markets to ensure healthy price competition where it ditectly effects consumers, i.e. retail cost of beef in this case.

And to break China. That's also a foundational goal of certain tariffs. This isn't one of those.

Age to slaughter is considerably higher for beef (18 to 24 months) compared to chicken (8 - 20 weeks)

That is a great way to say it's whatever Trump decides that day and always 8D MAGA chess.

I thought it was to bring manufacturing back here.
Or was it to raise revenue?
Or was it to "level the playing field" (whatever that means)?

Yes

I want to know how many MAGAts support Trumps comments to import more beef, and are also in support of massive tariffs.

When I lived in Louisiana, I used to buy half a cow from a guy I knew with a ranch near Bunkie. It was more than enough beef for a family of three.
Trying to find a guy in driving distance to Houston at the moment.
