While that may be true in some situations, the police need to be better trained in conflict resolution all together. Not every shot to a criminal needs to be a kill shot. Or 15+ shots to a suspect.

How do you explain that cops in Wyoming killed (6) twice as many as in all of the UK (3)?

All of those black thugs spilling out of the bad neighborhoods of Salt Lake City on a road trip crime spree?

It's not a big deal. Especially when you consider how many of them died from causes unrelated to criminals. Vehicle crashed, illness unrelated to the job, accidental, ect ect.

I guess we'll just have to disagree. I'm not arguing whether or not their job is dangerous. I'm just saying that to me, one death is a big deal.

There is an accepted risk in everything people do. Police just want you to believe they are somehow taking a greater risk than occupations of similar pay. This simply is not true.

Not really.

UK population- 64 million, 3 OIS deaths, or one death per 21.3 million people.

US Population- 320 Million 984+ OIS Deaths, at least one OIS death per 325,000 people. (there are other sources that have it higher (1184) as LE isn't required to disclose deaths for statistics purposes).

Comparing the two you'll notice that the US OIS death rate is roughly 66 times higher than the UK.

Honestly I think the two biggest reasons for that are:
1)The lack of easily available firearms over there. The average bobby isn't worried about their perps having a gun.

2)The inability of most British police to kill their perps as most are unarmed.

And one death is too many.

I never said that. But lets not act like the majority of those 984 deaths were warranted or justified.

How many were not?

New York state had one of the lowest rates of any state in the US.

Only training and instructions to hold their fire can account for that.

What this says is that most cops in the US just fire away unnecessarily and that many/most killings could be prevented.

There are so many differences between US and UK. That number means nothing without factoring in tons and tons of variables relating to population, culture, and how laws/policies are applied.

I'm outraged. Only 16 shy of an even 1000, and these bums couldn't get it done?

Like I said earlier in the thread, only those police convicted after the fact committed unjustified shootings- a steady average of 4/year over the last 7 years, or about one half of one percent of the time.

It's good to have a friend in the DA's office.

Most cops? There are somewhere around a million law enforcement officers in this country, yet only 984 deaths last year. That isn't accounting for justified occurrences which would put that number much lower. Far from "most".

It also helps when the "victim" is an armed felon.

So 5 times the population, 328 times the thugs killing folks? Makes sense.

The FBI hasn't published the 2015 stats yet but for 2013 and 2014 there were well over a million violent crimes in the U.S. and over 13 thousand homicides. LINK Given that the 2015 stats are likely similar, I don't see that 984 killed by police is unreasonable. Truth be told, there's was probably many more than needed killing.

They also have some of the most restrictive gun laws in the US. At least here, fewer guns means fewer shootings.

You can extrapolate that as you will.
