But it's OK for everyone pointing to the 984 number to brush it off like it's nothing because thugs with (or even without) guns deserve to die.

Interesting. Where did you read this?

Believe what? There are two thoughts in what you quoted, neither of which say police are always right.

If I was naive enough to think that the police are almost always right say < 4 convictions/984 shootings~99.5% (I thinks the number of people killed in OIS is higher btw), then I would think that the very small percentage of cops charged is reasonable, and I would hope for that. However, do you really believe that only those convicted were unjustified? Or is there a bigger problem here- I.E. prosecutors covering for their police to ensure future convictions, or manipulating secret grand juries to keep police officers out of petit trial?

Do you feel these to make up a majority of the 984?

Based on the videos we watched this past year it's certainly higher than those convicted, or even charged. Unless of course you think it's a total fluke, and that these videos of police misconduct is a very recent phenomenon.

Can I make impossible to prove statements too? Or is that something only you can do?

It's an opinion, based on the facts presented.

I missed the part where I said it was okay. One is too many deaths no matter who it is.

Conspiracy theory or you being an idiot for thinking all cops are here to protect and serve?

I think you're being an idiot for thinking 984 cops planted guns on criminals after shooting them.

I could ask you the other extreme. Do you believe that of the 1000+/- people killed every year by police, only 4 (on average) or <.5% were unjustified? Or that 99.5% were justified?

quote:

Of the 71 arrests for murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, just 31 came when officers were on duty. That’s about four a year during the study period. As a reminder, the best-available evidence from the Killed By Police Facebook page points to about 1,000 deaths each yearcaused by officers acting in the line of duty.

The US averages 5 murders per 100k and the UK is 1 per 100k.

I never said that. But lets not act like the majority of those 984 deaths were warranted or justified.

So, the average citizen is 5 times more likely to be killed in the US than the UK, and 66 times more likely to be killed by an American cop than a British Bobby.

Yikes.

That's because no one really takes their stupid British accents seriously.

I went to London once and some black dude, with perfect grammar and diction, tried to rob me. I just laughed at him and his stupid knife.

It is really scary when you think about it, to be fair though it was 4.7 in 2012 which is the lowest its been since 1963.

What exactly is contrarian about being ok with trash being killed when threatening other people? If you'd like to speak to how justified you think all 984 killings were, fine. Sorry I don't think everyone deserves to live regardless of their actions.

It's not a big deal. Especially when you consider how many of them died from causes unrelated to criminals. Vehicle crashed, illness unrelated to the job, accidental, ect ect.

People want to beleive that cops have some kind of crazy dangerous job. Hell even cops think they have an overly dangerous job. Yet an overwhelming majority of police go their entire career without ever firing their weapon.

Now if you consider the massive number of criminal interactions police have over the course of their career and the fact that less than 40 are killed in gunfire exchange, it doesn't seem that dangerous.

There are far more dangerous occupations that people do not consider to be dangerous because they aren't issued a gun upon hiring.

Those numbers are disappointing. Let's hope they break 1000 in 2016.

I don't necessarily disagree with that, at least not on a fundamental level. However, who do you grant the power to make the decision? Surely you wouldn't want some college dropout with a hardon for the war on drugs making that call. The fact that we give guns to police after a couple of months of "training" is fricking bonkers.
