They should at least have the option of declaring bankruptcy if it really came to that.

We have discussed a few times on here why letting someone declare bankruptcy on student loans is a bad idea.

I'd assume that the vast majority of people that have student loans would just claim bankruptcy

I never claimed that. I've never said how much income I have. Roger, my dad doesn't pay for anything (except for occasional gifts). I have my own money.

Yes you did. Your alter hasn't fooled anyone. You stated you received over 100k from your trust fund or was that a lie?

You just added the word "over" which makes a difference. Obviously, I do. But, I'm not rich.

You know that a loan is something that has to be paid back right and in these cases it is with interest?

Look how many people in this thread are advocating student loan forgiveness? It will soon just become another entitlement program to fund a bunch of useless Women's Studies or Political Science degrees.

if so, then you of all people should be opposed to loan forgiveness or free anything. Who do you think the money to fund these programs will eventually come from? Hint, YOU! You should be the lead tambourine on the gypsy train of people calling for financial responsibility and "pay as you go".
These aren't puppies or wounded vets or little kids born with birth defects (I support those charities as well ), but rather adults who made an informed, conscientious decision to borrow money with the expectations of repayment. You can't just write that off.

I agree, but we could do this by taxing income over $500k per year at a higher rate.

Because it's a signature loan where you're agreeing the money is to be used to improve your scarcity on the job market. The fact you have to pay back the money you take out should be a motivator to complete your degree and find gainful employment. Then there's the whole burden on the taxpayer situation and other borrowers through higher interest rates if discharge was allowed to happen.

Regardless, those that become disabled or face some other situation where there's no prospect of them paying it back can get their loans discharged, it's just very hard to do.

How did you arrive at that number? Why is it their responsibility for the failure of others?

so basically letting these people off? oh dont worry about your loan, we'll tax some rich person to take care of you

why should some person who has made great decisions in their life be made to pay for someone who made a bad decision?

A) Everyone would do it, right after college so that they don't have to bother paying it back and can wait out the hit to their credit.

B) Unlike a car loan or home loan, there's nothing to repossess if someone does default.

I admit that this troubles me the most about my position.

ETA: I don't want to punish responsible people. I don't want to reward irresponsible people.

YG, if you confiscated 100% of all the wealth of the wealthiest earners in this country, you still couldn't pay for education as you are advocating. LINK

and if you think that once you open that door to socialism, they won' toddle right over to your bank and take your money, you are dangerously naive.

It should trouble you enough to change your position.

Or you should start a charity to help out poor people suffering from crippling student loan debt. It would be more worthwhile than PETA.

The bad part in all of this is there are many options to help you avoid default if you're having financial difficulties. You can even extend out the repayment period to almost the length of a home loan. All anyone would have to sacrifice most of the time is dinner and a movie twice a month. But that's the issue. Some people don't want to give up any of their luxuries to pay back something that has already been consumed.
