If you honestly believe the federal govt can manage a "free" tuition program, not require colleges to lower their standards to admit certain groups, and not manage to turn the entire thing into a complete clusterfrick then there's no sense in us continuing this conversation.

You can run off into the rainbow filled sunset with the highly intelligent and reasonably sane yoga girl and live your life in federally funded bliss.

How does one horde wealth? Like there is a finite amount and everyone gets their fair share.

This is exactly why we need student loan forgiveness. We don't need the gestapo bashing into people's homes at gunpoint. Why seven marshals?

Yes, maybe this guy should have paid his student loan, but no, we don't need law enforcement involved.

You need to take out a student loan and enroll in a basic economics class.

These loans aren't just sitting out in the vacuum of bank space unpaid. They are owned by investors in the bond market (like people with a job and a 401K). Forgiving this debt would cause a serious crash in the bond market. Considering that we just had one of those in 2008 and caused a frickton of problems in the global economy, maybe we ought to pump the brakes of forgiving irresponsible people of their contracted to debts.

But income inequality.

Why would anyone with a degree or getting one want free college education? Part of the value of a college degree is that it sets you apart from those that don't have one. If you make it available to everybody it loses its exclusivity. That's part of the problem with degrees today. More peoe have them, so they become less valuable. Why are Harvard degrees so much more valuable? Because they are exclusive. It won't benefit degree holders to make them available to ever person out there.

How is getting a loan and not paying it back different from stealing?

It all revolves around intent. Sometimes your circumstances when you took the loan out change and you don't have the means to pay it back (not saying that's the case here, the guy had 25 years). I'm sure the vast majority of people that take loans out have every intention on paying them back.

Regardless, that's how banks set interest rates, to reflect risk associated with the loan - if you even qualify. Federal student loans don't have this safeguard, hence why there are so many delinquencies. The system should be overhauled to protect both banks and those that take these loans out (some have no business in college to begin with).

DeWorm the World is a great charity, very highly recommended. Parasites are a problem - of course their name isn't the greatest.

I highly doubt degree completion would rise all that much if it were "free". As it is now, almost everyone can finance their education, so it's doubtful that's the issue keeping some away from obtaining a degree. The money investment is only one portion of the equation. The most important is the time investment, and that's where a lot of people fail and end up dropping out. A degree shows you can commit and follow through.
