re: US Marshals arresting people for not paying their federal student loans

Thing I never understood about people not paying back loans is that there are multiple plans to help people pay off there loans. Really not hard at all. Just call up the loan provider or go online and you can set up affordable payments pretty easily.
I used loans to get through grad school. However, I researched loans and grants before applying and then made the best financial decisions I could make. Graduated a little 3 years ago and haven't missed a payment.
Was out of a job for a few months right after getting my Masters, contacted the loan company and worked out a plan. Not too hard.
Some people just need to grow up. If you make a financial commitment, do your research and know about your options BEFORE getting into that agreement. Don't feel sorry for anyone who can't take the time to do simple things to help themselves with loans/payments.

no shite. and how valuable are those liberal arts degrees? why is it that as more and more people got degrees the need for an more specialized degree (PE, Acct. etc) or an advanced degree grew? Again, if everyone has one, what makes it exceptional?

we could do this by taxing income over $500k per year at a higher rate.

It should trouble you enough to change your position.
Or you should start a charity to help out poor people suffering from crippling student loan debt. It would be more worthwhile than PETA
PETA is a good charity, though I don't agree with some of their more radical positions. And, I'm not naive - I do recognize that any government program always benefits the undeserving.

its not, which is why some people believe it should be offered to everyone who qualifies similar to that of a high school education
we have entire countries who feel this way (hell, even Louisiana feels this way)
our current model is obviously broken, unless of course, you believe placing an entire generation into massive debts are good ideas for the economy.
just lol baw

B) Unlike a car loan or home loan, there's nothing to repossess if someone does default.
There are other bankruptcy options than the standard, Ch.7 straight liquidation bankruptcy. In fact, a debtor just can't select a Ch.7 option. The debtor declaring for bankruptcy first must pass the "means test" before he is allowed to go forward with filling out his schedules.
Given the current student loan situation, I believe they should offer a Ch. 13 reorganizational plan. Have the loan service providers agree to a structured, rigid 60-month repayment plan. After the end of the 60th month, the remaining balance (if any) is forgiven. I also think legislation should be written to bar 1099-S forms for student loan debtors who choose to pursue the Ch. 13 route.

I'll be honest, I don't know all that much about the details of declaring bankruptcy, and I consider that a good thing.

We have discussed a few times on here why letting someone declare bankruptcy on student loans is a bad idea.
I respectfully disagree. If the current loans were made under the rule that bankruptcy is not allowed, perhaps those people are fricked and should be held to the terms they agreed to. But moving forward I think the law should be changed and the loans should be subject to forgiveness by bankruptcy just like any other debt. The banks would make the loans much harder to qualify for, which is fine. It should be a financial investment for those who take them out. And it should be a risk for the banks just like credit cards and mortgages are. The free market will sort out this situation.
People sometimes make mistakes that put them in debt that they are incapable of repaying (accidents and medical issues are two of them most common causes, but accruing credit card debt is another). Bankruptcy is an excrutiatingly painful process that leaves you financially crippled for a long time, but is at least a workable solution in the long run. Keeping people tied to insurmountable debt indefinitely may seem like a just solution, but it doesn't solve anything and leaves people crippled for their entire lives rather than for a decade. Debtor's prisons were outlawed long ago and bankruptcy instituted as a measure of last resort, and there are good reasons for this. Some crimes are bad enough to be worth ruining someone's entire life over. Some are not. I think debt falls in the second category.

It sure seems like you do.
Here's a thought. Rather than taxing people at a higher rate, why don't you donate more of your wealth to the college of your choice or pay off someone's debt? You believe in debt forgiveness, pay a debt off for someone.

Obviously I don't believe that, but I don't believe higher ed should be free, either. I agree the model is broken, but I'll agree to disagree on how to repair it.

I don't believe this is correct. Her money comes from a trust fund and has thus already been earned and taxed. Like most liberals, they want someone else to pay for everything.

ftr, i never said i think it should be "free" but i do believe in the next 20 years it will be.
regardless, i do believe something needs to change, im just not sure "free" tuition is the solution.

Where is the money going to come from for "free" college tuition?
