Do you have any links to those studies, would like to read them.

LINK
here is a site with some

LINK

that link has more detailed information and is from a less biased source. that 2nd one shows that in SD, specifically, it's lower for DP but almost everywhere else it's a lot more expensive

you can google and find a lot more

If we killed more mentally incompetent people this nation wouldn’t be in such a mess

If we elected fewer corrupt assholes, things would be better as well.

They claim the death penalty is more costly because they count the dollars that were already budgeted for, regardless of which case is before the court, as part of the cost. The DA, Judge and defense are going to be paid whether they are dealing with a death penalty case or an armed robbery. The appeals courts are getting paid whether they hear a capital case or any other. In fact, as you know, many capital cases are defended by Capital defense attorneys free to the defendant. Some of the additional costs specific to the capital case would be those to hire experts for each side.

Tell me if I'm incorrect. I'm open to that.

The woman committed a heinous crime and there are multiple victims of that action who have suffered unimaginable agony. However, Montgomery is the product of a society which cares NOTHING about the welfare of children. She was subjected to acts as a child that would be unthinkable in a sick, twisted novel. Gang raped repeatedly from the age of 4 by groups of her step father's "friends" including the step father. Pimped out as a prostitute between the age of 5 and 18 by her mother who also thought proper punishment for unruly children included things like stabbing the family dog to death in front of the kids and chaining the kids nude in the yard in the winter for days on end when they misbehaved. Her mother also sold her several times, apparently.

I do not support the death penalty as it is applied without rhyme or reason and it kills innocent people all to often. There is no doubt of her guilt but when society fails in such a catastrophic manner we should do the right thing and curb our desire for justice and allow some compassion. This woman belonged in an asylum...she was never going to be a member of society and not be a problem....but given her nightmarish life at the hands of people we as humans have to have early in life to protect and nurture us is it too much to ask not to throw her away like so much rubbish?

It goes back to the issues we see of an overloaded CPS system where kids often fall through the cracks (and don't exactly grow up to be great citizens as a result) and a mental health system that doesn't provide much for those without the means to obtain services.

But they're always the first services to get funding cuts because CPS gets lumped in with welfare services and for many mental health services are considered to be "quackery".

Instead we rather spend over a trillion dollars on things like the War on Drugs.

Good summary. I've grown more and more against the death penalty in most cases, and this is one. What this lady did is unthinkable, and in most cases it is probably death penalty worthy, however this lady never had a chance in life. Her "parents" are the ones who truly deserve the death penalty, and she needs to be locked in a psych ward.

This is nothing like the "incompetent" man that was executed a few weeks ago that had Twitter up in arms, this one was very much a debatable one.

What is "mentally incompetent" really mean? About as much as "learning disability" does in the school system. The whole psychiatry/mental health field is borderline witchcraft flim-flammery, anyway. Put a large dose of politics in it and you you can diagnose anyone anyway you want.

I life is a life, but the difference is the fetus did not murder anyone. That's kind of a key distinction between the two
