re: US executes first woman since 1953: a monster named Lisa Montgomery
I agree with evil is the same as mentally ill. This lady had the thought process to know how to kill a woman, cut it out, then care for the baby and pass it off as her own. She knew the difference of right and wrong regardless of he past (even though incredibly tragic). That is easily a death penalty choice for me.

Wait. What?

Because the capital offense appeal system is horribly broken, it is exploited by criminal defense attorneys and anti-death penalty advocates to "bleed" the system of money in order to allow folks to make this argument credibly.

If we streamlined the appeals system, stovepiped it directly to the state supreme court, and then directly to the SCOTUS, even if we had them all appoint special masters to screen in/out (with the court formally adopting their recommendations by vote), we could cut the cost of these cases tremendously. But, as it is now, they go through 5 or 6 levels of appeal over 15, 20 years, typically, at a cost of hundred of thousands/millions of taxpayer dollars in order to execute a single person.

I agree with you second. She definitely knew right from wrong and had the knowledge how to take care of an infant. Too many criminals use the nut case defense to avoid the death penalty. I know a couple of people who were raised in awful situations when they were kids and they sure don't go and kill people to get what they want. I don't buy that awful childhood defense. They grew up and got jobs and some are the core of their families, yet I'm supposed to believe that they suddenly snapped and decided to kill people, bull shite. I wasn't picked for jury duty in Livingston because I believed in the death penalty. The defendant was sitting at the front table trying to intimidate you by staring at you. I simply stared back. The defendant was the guy who ran over the pizza delivery guy on purpose in Albany. He was found guilty at his trial and received the death penalty. I guess they couldn't find enough people who were against the death penalty for that crime. The criminal ran over that poor guy numerous times and it wasn't a quick death for the poor guy. The criminal and his victim went to high school together. I'm sure many people remember this crime. They need to put that scum in a street and slowly roll over his arse until he is dead. I'm all for executing the criminal in the same manner that the thug killed his innocent victim.

The woman committed a heinous crime and there are multiple victims of that action who have suffered unimaginable agony. However, Montgomery is the product of a society which cares NOTHING about the welfare of children. She was subjected to acts as a child that would be unthinkable in a sick, twisted novel. Gang raped repeatedly from the age of 4 by groups of her step father's "friends" including the step father. Pimped out as a prostitute between the age of 5 and 18 by her mother who also thought proper punishment for unruly children included things like stabbing the family dog to death in front of the kids and chaining the kids nude in the yard in the winter for days on end when they misbehaved. Her mother also sold her several times, apparently.

I do not support the death penalty as it is applied without rhyme or reason and it kills innocent people all to often. There is no doubt of her guilt but when society fails in such a catastrophic manner we should do the right thing and curb our desire for justice and allow some compassion. This woman belonged in an asylum...she was never going to be a member of society and not be a problem....but given her nightmarish life at the hands of people we as humans have to have early in life to protect and nurture us is it too much to ask not to throw her away like so much rubbish?

Don’t blame society for the failures of her parents.

I remember seeing it on the news when this happened. That’s one twisted bitch. Didn’t realize it was so long ago.
