Looks like a flying carpenter's square. Perhaps, that's a part of the stealth--to deceive people that we are coming to build instead of destroy.

It's happened in Afghanistan.

Large scale? Probably 2003 in Iraq.

BUT.

Given the advanced radars on some aircraft, they can easily be nearly as accurate as GPS-aided weapons.

Also, it's embarrassingly easy to jam GPS, so it's not a capability we can afford to lose.

If you are completely ignorant on a particular subject, I find it best to shut the frick up.

I normally am all for staying ahead of the game but I don't know why there is a pressing need for this platform.

No B-52s have been brought down by enemy fire in the post-Vietnam era. We don't need level bombers because our ROE don't allow anything other than precision bombing with no chance of collateral damage unless it is a unique situation like Tora Bora.

As far as the air part of the triad with nukes, the B-2 can cover that already.

Only way these would end up paying off would be an all out war against Russia or China.

That version of the F-4 is an F-4U I believe.

It has a camera for recon instead of the 20mm cannon found in the more traditional F-4E.

It costs the taxpayers a lot.

It doesn't do it's job more than it does it's job.

It leaves places worse after visiting them.

You never know where it is but it always turns up at the wrong time.

I got a million of 'em.

I don't know what model F-4 is in the pic, but whatever model was originally sent into combat in Vietnam didn't have a gun. Missiles only.

Once they realized their mistake, an external gun pod was designed and used until later models were developed with an internal gun.

Hey guys, here's a hint. Our nuclear deterrent can not rely upon bombers. Hell, you could get rid of the land-based missiles and we'd be fine with just the boomers--which are the most flexible and survivable option.

Blows my mind that the Air Force has a larger budget than the Navy.

Also, the B-2 ran on conventional jet fuel. The newer model can have tax dollars fed directly into it for propulsion.

you deserve the acclaim for this

Pretty much, and I'm a Buff guy.

The brass will tell you that bombers provide threat escalation capability, but...stealth ones don't do that as well, and honestly we don't need to escalate nuclear threat against non-nuclear powers. Against nuclear ones, it doesn't really matter because MAD.

We should just go full conventional on the air side, save the nuke money, and use it to modernize the other two Triad elements that are actually survivable.

at $550M/bomber the B-21 will be $1.5B cheaper per plane

The B-2 per unit cost is highly inflated mostly because the original plan was to build over 130 instead of the 21 actually built.

In other words, back in the day they said something like this too.

quote:

The Air Force plans to purchase 80–100 LRS-B aircraft at a cost of $550 million each (2010 dollars).

I feel you, Navy. Do the math on how many current generation aircraft carriers could have been built with the money spent on the F-35.

It sure as hell happened in Iraq. Probably in Afghanistan too. Third-World types do buy fairly advanced anti-air systems, their main problem is that they have a hard time finding people who can operate them competently.

This may be one of the best posts I've ever seen on this website. Well done.

To the OP story...this seems like a massive waste of taxpayers money.
