They got caught.

I have a value edition TDI with a 6spd. It's about a million times nicer than anything else I test drove in that price range when I was shopping in 2014
Well....maybe they put they money they saved on engines that meet emissions into other parts of their designs.
My brother's VW is a 2012 I think. It's had some problems with interior trim (rattles, lose pieces, sagging headliner). Handles well though. It's a good commuter vehicle.
A lot of their competitors that didn't cheat either charged more for their diesels or chose not to offer diesels at all. I'm curious if VW would have even had a TDI line in their lower priced cars if they played by the same rules as everyone else.

Oh there's no doubt they cheated and made sales because of it.
I just want to know if I'm going to have to buy another vehicle, which I am assuming I will. By the time this is settled my car will have over 75k miles on it at minimum. It'll be cheaper for them to buy it back than to fix it.

Ours is at 97k. We actually don't need the commuter vehicle anymore. So this may work out for us.

I'm gonna be upset if I have to drive a shitty Mazda 3 every day. I like my car a whole lot.

No, I don't.
It would cost VW much more in legal fees and loss of corporate image.
Best idea here is to fix the cars, take care of the customers, and move on.

Haha. I was thinking yesterday what developing country is suddenly going to be packed with diesel VW's.
For some reason I woke up super early this morning and couldn't sleep. Started thinking of all the options for cars if I do have to sell this back (I realize I don't have to do anything, but it would be in my best interest). I cannot think of anything I really want. I was so close to having this paid off and planned to drive it for the next several years. Any car that I'd want to drive would put me in a note I don't feel like having right now. I could always just pay cash for an old Honda Accord or something, but I'd hate driving it. VW is apparently stepping up to take care of the mistake, but it really sucks anyway since this is one of the only cars that I actually didn't mind driving (in the price range).

Too bad my wife's Tiguan isn't diesel. I'd love for them to buy back that POS.

Well at least VW has the cash to do whatever it takes. They're a mammoth of a company.

someone just brought up a good point on one of the tdi message boards. What if someone with a TDI gets into a wreck and totals the car? What value is the insurance company going to give a TDI? That would be pretty messed up if they are able to give you pennies on the dollar for it because of the emissions scandal. If that were to happen, I would have to lawyer up.

The Mazda3 and TDI SEL aren't exactly in the same class.
Unless you had a Jetta, you should be okay getting up to the Mazda6 range - (?)

How awesome would it be if you could keep the $5K, keep the car and enjoy the low diesel prices...win/win/win.

Your wife or the Tiguan?
Golfer, I saw the OP when you posted it initially. So VW went from $5,000 back to buying the car in 6 hours?

I have a cheap Jetta. It's the most stripped out basic TDI you could get in 2014, which IMO is still pretty nice.

Oh I'm sure they would try to write you a check for today's trade in value, which happens to be about zero dollars

If the government not permitting you to drive around a perfectly good car you've paid for isn't America, then I don't know what is!

I think I would hold on, get the money or whatever, get the car fixed, and if I was gonna sell, I'd wait six months.
I bet ultimately this won't hurt the car's value more than a $1K or so.
VW owners may come out waaay ahead here. Just wait until all the furor dies down before you sell. The buying public has a short memory.
ETA: And let's be honest, assuming the car is fixed and can be legally driven, most buyers don't care if the car pollutes a bit too much.

It isn't going to pollute a lot after the fix. It will just have crappy MPG which is the reason why a person would pay extra for the diesel model of the vehicle.
This diesel scandal has literally dropped the value of my gasoline VW Passat.

What's crappy about it? I heard they are a nice small SUV.
